TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thai Airways and Thai Air Asia have imposed a ban on the use of power banks to charge mobile phones while on the aircraft. This is in response to the increasing incidents of cabin fires caused by portable batteries lately.
As reported by The Nation, Thai Airways has implemented this ban starting from March 15, 2025. However, passengers are still allowed to carry power banks in their carry-on bags, as long as they adhere to the capacity limits set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). In addition to capacity, the power banks must also be in good condition and comply with IATA safety standards.
AirAsia allows power banks with a rating of up to 100 Wh. They prohibit power banks in checked baggage due to the risk of lithium batteries overheating. These regulations are in line with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards.
CAAT and Thai airlines continue to emphasize the importance of verifying the capacity and condition of power banks before traveling. The allowed capacities to be brought in cabin bags are as follows:
-Capacities up to 100 Wh, maximum 20,000 mAh, maximum 20 units per passenger.
-Between 100 Wh/20,000 mAh and 160 Wh/32,000 mAh, maximum 2 units per passenger.
-Above 160 Wh/32,000 mAh: Prohibited.
Bans in Korean and Taiwanese Airlines
Airlines in South Korea and Taiwan have implemented stricter measures, including a ban on charging power banks during flights and restrictions on storing them in overhead compartments.
This ban follows previous flight incidents. In February 2024, a power bank exploded during a flight on an AirAsia aircraft. The plane was flying from Bangkok to Nakhon Si Thammarat in southern Thailand when fire and smoke were seen 30 minutes into the flight. The fire was successfully extinguished within minutes.
A fire also occurred on an Air Busan aircraft on January 28 as it was preparing to depart for Hong Kong, triggered by a power bank stored in the overhead compartment. The fire was first detected when a flight attendant saw smoke in the luggage rack at the top on the left rear side of the aircraft, Air Busan said. All passengers on the aircraft were evacuated safely.
