TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Antibiotics are important drugs in the medical world, treating infections by working to kill or slow the growth of bacteria in the body.
However, antibiotics cannot be used to treat diseases or infections caused by viruses, such as the flu and cough. Using antibiotics for diseases caused by viral infections is actually dangerous because it increases the body's resistance to antibiotics.
The use of antibiotics such as penicillin and cephalosporin must be based on a doctor's prescription to ensure proper usage and avoid harm. The use of antibiotics that are not in accordance with the doctor's prescription will cause side effects that are dangerous to the body.
The dangers of bacterial resistance from antibiotic misuse
Reported by the Mayo Clinic, resistance or rejection of the body to antibiotics is caused by excessive use of antibiotics. This is because bacteria that are killed by antibiotics can change in several ways.
These changes cause bacteria to be able to protect themselves or limit the drugs' access to the bacteria. In addition, these changes give bacteria the ability to change drugs and destroy them.
Besides overusing antibiotics, the prescribed drugs must be taken in full dosage to kill the disease-causing bacteria. People often skip this instruction once they feel better or when the symptoms no longer show.
However, if the treatment is halted in the middle of the process, there is a risk of repeating the treatment from the beginning again later, or, promoting the spread of antibiotic-resistant properties among the bacteria.
This resistant trait can also be spread to other bacteria in the body. This is because bacteria in the body help each other to survive.
This drug resistance is causing increasing health care problems in the world. There are more than 2.8 million infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics in the United States, of which 35,000 deaths occur.
Bacterial resistance to antibiotics poses serious dangers. This includes worsening patient's illness, recovery taking longer, hospitalization being more intensive and longer, increasing the number of hospital visits, and causing more expensive care.
