TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pope Francis was buried on Saturday, April 26, 2025. The man who passed away at the age of 88 was known as a very humble and simple figure throughout his life.
As the Head of State of the Vatican, Pope Francis practiced a simple lifestyle to truly embody his closeness to the papal community. Unlike the tradition of previous popes that had lasted for 110 years, he refused to live in the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican. Instead, Francis chose to reside in a two-bedroom apartment at the Domus Sanctae Marthae usually used by visiting cardinals.
Before passing away a day after Easter Monday on Monday, April 21, 2025, the Pope had already arranged his funeral ceremony. In November 2024, Francis simplified the funeral ceremony, which had been elaborate and lengthy for previous popes.
He eliminated the grandeur of the papacy, one of which was by reducing the number of coffins from three to one. The new burial rules allowed the Pope to be buried in a church other than St. Peter's Basilica. He chose the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome as his final resting place.
Reported by Hello, despite his simplicity, Pope Francis was said to have a personal net worth of 16 million. Most of his wealth came from cars, houses, and his clothing.
As Pope, he received an annual salary of 384,000. However, he refused to accept the salary and was said to have donated his wealth to separate funds and trusts.
Francis chose this lifestyle because of the religious order he belonged to. He was a member of the Jesuit order, which vowed to serve Christ better. The man who was born with the name Jorge Mario Bergoglio had lived the same life before becoming Pope. He refused any form of money from the Catholic Church.
As part of this, he refused the traditional gold ring worn by previous popes and chose a cheaper gold-plated ring.
However, the amount of wealth left by the late Pope Francis is still a subject of debate. Some sources say that due to his lifestyle, his wealth was less than 100.
