TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for potential tidal flooding and high waves along the northern coast of West Java. The agency has also issued warnings for high waves in southern waters.
According to BMKG, between July 9-16, several areas in the northern coast with potential for tidal flooding are Legonkulon and Sukasari in Subang Regency, as well as Kandanghaur, Pasekan, and Indramayu in Indramayu Regency.
Furthermore, areas such as Losari, Mundu, and Gebang in Cirebon Regency, and Lemahwungkuk and Kejaksaan in the city of Cirebon are at risk. The potential time for coastal flooding is estimated to be between 6:00 PM and 12:00 AM local time.
BMKG states that the potential tidal flooding is due to the phenomenon of maximum high tides coinciding with a super new moon or full moon when the Moon is at its closest distance to Earth (perigee) and in the new moon phase.
Tidal flooding can affect daily activities and transportation around ports and along coastlines. This is particularly true for activities related to loading and unloading, as well as for settlements and inland fishing.
BMKG urges residents to be vigilant of weather changes and sea conditions, avoid risky activities in coastal areas, and ensure that drainage systems around residential areas are functioning properly to prevent waterlogging.
In addition, the early warning from BMKG also applies to the southern coast. According to Indra Pratama, a forecaster from BMKG, sea waves with heights ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 meters are likely to occur in the waters off the coast of Garut, Tasikmalaya, and Pangandaran from July 8 to 11, 2026. "It poses a risk to the safety of fishing boat navigation if the wind speed reaches 15 knots and the wave height reaches 1.25 meters," he said in a written statement on July 7, 2026.
Barge navigation poses a safety risk when wind speeds reach 16 knots and wave heights reach 1.5 meters.
The wind patterns in the southern region of West Java move from the east-southeast at speeds of 5-25 knots. "Maximum wind speeds of 25 knots are predicted to occur in the waters of Sukabumi, Cianjur, and Garut," stated Indra. Meanwhile, in the waters of Sukabumi and Cianjur, wave heights can reach 2.5-4 meters.
