Today's Downpour: Tracing the Origins of Heavy Rain in Jakarta and Bogor

5 hours ago 14

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has announced the potential for heavy rain in the Jakarta area today, Monday, July 7, 2025. The rain has the potential to be widespread and even accompanied by lightning, except for South Jakarta where only light rain is predicted.

The BMKG weather forecast also mentions the potential for rain in the surrounding areas of Jakarta, such as Bogor Regency and City, as well as Depok City. Meanwhile, other areas such as Bekasi and Tangerang are expected to have cloudy weather today, according to BMKG.

The BMKG had previously predicted that Indonesia, especially the southern and eastern parts, would experience significant cloud growth. The potential for the formation of rain clouds is still quite high, partly due to the indication of a weak Australian monsoon.

"This has caused the atmosphere conditions in most of the southern parts of Indonesia to remain humid," said the BMKG in the Weather Outlook for the period of July 4-10, 2025.

Researchers at the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Erma Yulihastin, again pointed to the phenomenon of the Mesoscale Convective Complex (MCC) cloud cluster behind the high-intensity rain over the past weekend in Jabodetabek and other areas in the southern part of Indonesia. The intensity of the rain even triggered floods and landslides.

The MCC and Squall Line storm (a row of cumulonimbus clouds forming in a long line) formed in Sumatra due to cyclonic vortex effects in the Indian Ocean. Erma explained that these two phenomena would persist and continue to spread to Kalimantan and Java. "This pattern will repeat for a period of 10 days, due to the cyclonic vortex effect in the Indian Ocean," said the Professor in Climatology on Sunday night, July 6, 2025.

She added that on Monday morning, July 7, 2025, it would take 6-9 hours for the cluster and row of cumulonimbus clouds that carry the potential for heavy rain to spread to Kalimantan, or 12-24 hours to Java. Moreover, Erma said that the disintegrated MCC could be reinforced due to its interaction with the warming Java Sea temperature.

"So, the MCC that formed in Jabodetabek is not only the result of spreading from Sumatra, but also experiences a strengthening process so that when formed above Jabodetabek, it becomes a broad system that extends to Purwakarta and Bandung," she explained.
