1. BMKG: Jakarta Remains on Alert for Very Heavy Rain Today
A number of areas across Jakarta and its surroundings will continue to be showered with rain today, January 23, 2026. The rainfall began in the early hours of the morning, and in some locations, it is expected to persist throughout the morning hours.
In general, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that moderate-intensity rain will be experienced across the entire Jakarta land area all day. Only the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) are expected to see light rain of less than 20 mm per day.
The forecast is similar for the surrounding satellite cities. According to BMKG, only Bekasi Regency is expected to experience light rain today. The rest, including Bogor Regency and City, Bekasi City, Depok City, and Tangerang Regency and City, are all potentially affected by moderate-intensity rain.
2. Jakarta Floods Inundate 125 RT on Friday Morning
The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that 125 neighborhood units (RT) and 14 road sections were inundated by floods as of Friday morning, January 23, 2026, at 6:00 a.m. WIB. The flooding followed torrential rainfall that has lashed Jakarta and its satellite cities since Thursday, January 22, 2026.
Mohamad Yohan, Head of the BPBD Jakarta Data and Information Center, confirmed that hundreds of neighborhood units were submerged due to the intense precipitation. "The heavy rain hitting Jakarta and its surrounding areas has triggered several points of inundation," Yohan stated on Friday, January 23, 2026.
South Jakarta emerged as the hardest-hit region with 55 inundated neighborhood units. Among the affected areas were Petogogan, where 26 RTs saw water levels reach 30 centimeters; Ulujami, with 8 RTs submerged under up to 70 centimeters; and Pela Mampang, where 9 RTs faced depths of approximately 75 centimeters.
Flooding in these districts is generally attributed to high rainfall coupled with the overflow of the Krukut, Pesanggrahan, and Mampang Rivers.
3. Northern Lights Dazzle US, Europe Amid Intense Solar Storm
An intense geomagnetic storm triggered the possibility of northern lights being sighted across Canada and the northern half of the United States on Monday night, along with parts of Europe, including Germany, Switzerlandand Ukraine.
'Rare' geostorm showers Earth
The solar storm—which is the largest in over two decades—is the outcome of a mass eruption of charged particles that left the sun on Sunday and are forecasted to arrive Monday and Tuesday, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
A geomagnetic storm is a major disturbance in Earth's magnetic field due to a solar storm. Monday night's storm was "very rare," NOAA said.
The geostorm acquired G4 conditions at 7:38 pm GMT (8:38 pm CET) on Monday, putting it in the second-highest category, the agency added.
Spaceweather, an astronomy platform, reported that the ejection cloud covered the distance from the sun to the earth in nearly 25 hours. Usually, a similar cloud would take three to four days to make the journey.
