Tracing the Source of Indonesia's Radioactive Shrimp

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A container carrying 15 tons of frozen vannamei shrimp arrived at Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta on Friday, September 26, 2025. The shipment, owned by Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS), was sent back from the Port of Los Angeles, United States, after the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detected traces of radioactive contamination of cesium-137 in July 2025.

A joint Indonesian team-comprising the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and the Indonesian Quarantine Agency quickly launched an inspection. The quarantine office had even prepared a special warehouse near the port to store the shipment in case further tests confirmed the presence of cesium-137.

But the team later confirmed to have found no trace of radioactive material. "Bapeten has checked, and no cesium-137 was detected," said Abdul Qohhar, Coordinator of Bapeten's Public Communication, in Jakarta on Monday, September 29, 2025. The test results, however, contradicted findings by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which had identified the presence of radioactive material.

The FDA's investigation began after a CBP report detected cesium-137 (Cs-137) in five containers of shrimp that entered four ports: Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami. All five were shipped by BMS.
