TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump stated that discussions regarding a plan to end the "war" in Gaza have reached the final stage, suggesting an agreement could be announced within the next two days. Trump made the comment in an interview with Axios, just before his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday, September 29.
"Everybody has come together to get a deal, but we still have to get it done," Trump said. He added that the Arab countries were "fantastic to work with on this," and Hamas was also involved with them. "They have great respect for the Arab world," he said.
Trump emphasized the widespread backing for the deal: "The Arab world wants peace, Israel wants peace, and Bibi (Netanyahu) wants peace."
Broader Regional Hopes and Ceasefire Details
Trump believes his plan will not only halt the war in Gaza but also pave the way for broader regional peace. "It will be the first chance for real peace in the Middle East. But we have to get it done first," he said, calling that a successful agreement will be "a great day for Israel and the Middle East."
This optimism aligns with a report from The Indian Express, which states Netanyahu confirmed Tel Aviv is working closely with Washington to draft a ceasefire plan, with details being finalized as the two nations reportedly move closer to an agreement.
Netanyahu faces immense international pressure following the ground assault to retake Gaza City earlier this month. Data from the Gaza Health Ministry as of Sunday, September 28, shows the death toll in the Israel-Hamas war has surpassed 66,000.
Key Proposal Contents
According to the same report, the 21-point proposal under discussion by the Trump administration and Netanyahu’s team includes three key elements: the release of all Hamas hostages within 48 hours, an immediate ceasefire, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
As widely reported, several key Israeli allies, including France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, have now officially recognized Palestine. Furthermore, the European Union is reportedly considering sanctions in response to Israel's continuing attacks in Gaza.
