TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump firmly stated that he will not attend the emergency meeting of the G7 countries proposed to take place in Paris. Trump made the statement on Tuesday, January 20, citing his doubt about the continuity of President Emmanuel Macron's leadership.

As reported by Anadolu, when asked by journalists during a press conference at the White House about the possibility of attending the meeting, Trump briefly answered, "No, I wouldn't do that." Trump then explained his reason by directly referring to Macron's political position.

"Because, you know, Emmanuel is not going to be there very long. And, you know, there's no longevity there. He's a friend of mine. He's a nice guy. I like Macron, but he's not going to be there very much longer," said Trump.

Macron's Offer Through Private Message

On the same day, Trump posted a screenshot of a private message from Macron on his Truth Social account. In the post, Macron offered to host a meeting in Paris on Thursday evening after the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

"I can invite the Ukrainians, the Danish, the Syrians and the Russians in the margins. Let us have a dinner together in Paris together on Thursday before you go back to the U.S.," Macron wrote. According to France24 report, Macron's close circle confirmed that the message was a private offer to organize the G7 meeting in Paris.

The offer emerged amid increasing tension between the United States and Europe. Trump had previously threatened to impose tariffs on eight European countries to pressure the European Union regarding the Greenland issue.

The relationship between Trump and Macron also deteriorated after Trump threatened a 200 percent tariff on French wine, following France's refusal to decline an invitation to join the "Board of Peace" initiated by Trump. A source close to Macron also stated, "Tariff threats to influence our foreign policy are unacceptable and ineffective."

Russia Has Not Received an Invitation

Meanwhile, Russia stated that it has not received any invitation regarding the proposed meeting. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, "No, it has not," when asked if Moscow had received an invitation.

Macron is scheduled to arrive in Davos on Tuesday morning and return to Paris on the same evening. Elysee Palace advisors stated that there are no plans to extend the visit until Wednesday, the day when Trump is scheduled to arrive in the city.
