TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump has halted military aid to Ukraine after clashing with President Volodymyr Zelensky last week. As quoted by Reuters, a White House official said President Trump has committed to peace and expressed a desire for Zelensky to share this goal.

The White House has declined to comment on how much aid will get suspended. The Pentagon has also not provided further details. The Zelensky office and the Ukrainian Embassy in the U.S. have remained silent.

The suspension of aid comes after Trump altered U.S. policy towards Ukraine and Russia after taking office in January. Trump took a softer stance towards Moscow.

Last week, when meeting Zelensky, Trump criticized him for not being thankful enough for Washington's support in the war with Russia. On Monday, Trump reiterated that Zelensky should show more appreciation for America's support.

Trump had previously angrily responded to an Associated Press report quoting Zelensky as saying that the end of the war was still far off.

However, on Monday, Trump also hinted that a deal with Ukraine on U.S. mineral investment could still be reached. The Trump administration views the mineral deal as a way for the U.S. to recoup some of the tens of billions of dollars poured into Ukraine. The U.S. has provided financial and military aid during the Russian invasion over the past three years.

When asked if the mineral deal had failed, Trump said at the White House on Monday, "No, I don't think so."

Over the past three years, the U.S. Congress has approved a total of US$175 billion in aid for Ukraine since the Russian invasion. In December 2024, President Joe Biden announced an additional security and budget aid of US$5.9 billion, just before leaving the office.

U.S. aid to Ukraine includes military and budgetary. Most of the aid is channeled through the World Bank's trust fund, and other funds have been channeled through the U.S. International Development Agency. Trump has been restricted these funds.

Some of the money sent by the U.S. to Ukraine helps the country pay the salaries of teachers, doctors, and to maintain the government's operation, allowing it to focus on fighting Russia.
