TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump has rescinded Canada’s invitation to join the newly formed Board of Peace, also known as the Gaza Peace Council, just hours after the body was officially launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
According to CNA, the decision came after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a speech at Davos in which he criticized powerful nations for using economic integration as a tool of coercion and tariffs as instruments of pressure.
Trump announced the revocation in a post on his Truth Social platform, directly addressing Carney.
“Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time,” Trump wrote.
Carney Warns of “Cracks” in Global Order
Carney’s remarks at the forum drew significant attention. He urged nations to recognize the decline of a rule-based global order, arguing that the US-led governance system is showing serious cracks.
“Call it what it is: a system of intensifying great power rivalry where the most powerful pursue their interests using economic integration as coercion,” Carney said. He also warned that countries like Canada could no longer expect compliance to secure their safety, adding, “It won't.”
Funding Controversy Surrounding the Board of Peace
The cancellation of Canada’s invitation came shortly after Trump officially launched the Board of Peace, naming himself as chairman. Initially designed to oversee the Gaza ceasefire and post-conflict reconstruction, the council is envisioned to expand into a global conflict mediation mechanism.
Trump stated that member countries are required to contribute $1 billion in funding. “Once this board is completely formed, we can do pretty much whatever we want to do,” he said in Davos, adding that the Board would work alongside the United Nations.
The Board of Peace was reportedly approved through a UN Security Council resolution as part of Trump’s Gaza peace initiative. Countries that have accepted the invitation include Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Egypt, and Hungary, with additional participants from Morocco, Indonesia, Kosovo, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Belarus.
