TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono said the newly formed Board of Peace is not intended to replace the role of the United Nations, but rather to complement existing international efforts to promote peace and stability, particularly in Gaza.
Speaking in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, on Friday, January 23, 2026, following President Prabowo Subianto’s participation in the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, Sugiono said the initiative was driven by concern over ongoing conflict and humanitarian conditions in Gaza.
He explained that Indonesia decided to join the Board of Peace to contribute to conflict resolution, peace-building efforts, and post-conflict rehabilitation in Gaza, Palestine.
“Indonesia believes it must take part in efforts to achieve peace. That is why we decided to join,” Sugiono said, as quoted in a statement from the Presidential Secretariat.
Sugiono, who also serves as secretary-general of the Gerindra Party, said Indonesia has long maintained a strong commitment to international peace and stability, with particular attention to the Palestinian cause.
He acknowledged that the formation of the Board of Peace moved relatively quickly, but said President Prabowo had weighed various strategic considerations before deciding to participate.
“Because the Board of Peace is part of the effort to achieve peace, Indonesia believes it is important to be involved,” he said.
Sugiono added that the decision followed intensive consultations with countries within the so-called Group of New York. Several countries have agreed to join the initiative, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, Turkey, Pakistan, and Egypt.
“Two days before the signing, all of them agreed to join the Board of Peace,” Sugiono said.
He described the initiative as a long-awaited concrete step toward safeguarding the peace process in Palestine, expressing hope that the participation of these countries would help keep efforts focused on Palestinian independence and the realization of a two-state solution.
The Board of Peace is a new initiative proposed by U.S. President Donald J. Trump, aimed at overseeing developments in Gaza following Israel’s military operations.
President Prabowo signed the Board of Peace Charter on Thursday, January 22, 2026. The launch took place on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos.
At the event, Prabowo said there had been positive developments in Gaza and reaffirmed Indonesia’s readiness to play an active role in international peace efforts as part of its broader humanitarian commitment.
“The suffering of the people of Gaza has significantly diminished. Humanitarian aid has begun to flow in, and Indonesia is ready to participate,” Prabowo told reporters in Davos on Thursday.
