Trump's Policy Threatens Harvard Status of Canadian PM's Daughter, Belgian Heiress

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has revoked Harvard University's eligibility to admit international students, putting thousands of foreign students at risk of deportation from the U.S.

Harvard University filed a lawsuit against this decision last Friday, citing a violation of the First Amendment. A judge temporarily blocked the action, which threatened 7,000 visa holders.

On Friday, Harvard University sued the U.S. government over its decision to revoke the university's eligibility to admit international students, stating that it violates the First Amendment. The action would directly impact and jeopardize its 7,000 international visa holders.

According to NDTV, a U.S. judge blocked the Trump administration from revoking Harvard University's ability to enroll foreign students and lifted a temporary restraining order.

If Trump's policy is enforced, Harvard University can not admit foreign students for two years. This policy even forces existing students to transfer to other American universities to maintain their student visas.

The ongoing dispute stems from a request made by the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, on April 16, 2025. She demanded that Harvard disclose information about its foreign students. If they are involved in demonstrations, the students could be deported.

According to Canadian Press, there are 686 Canadian students registered at Harvard, according to the 2022 figures on its website. Among these students is Cleo Carney, the daughter of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has just completed her first year at Harvard. She is an undergraduate student in the resource efficiency program.

Another notable student affected by Trump's policy is Princess Elisabeth of Belgium. She is the heiress to the Belgian throne and has just finished her first year in a two-year master's program in public policy at Harvard Kennedy School.

Currently, Princess Elisabeth is in Belgium. According to the Royal Palace, she is awaiting clarification on whether she can continue her second year at Harvard University. "We are looking into the situation, to see what kind of impact this decision might have on the princess, or not. It’s too early to say right now," said the head of the palace's communication, Xavier Baert.

Harvard has condemned the Trump administration's actions as illegal and announced that it will provide immediate guidance to affected international students.

"With the stroke of a pen, the government has sought to erase a quarter of Harvard’s student body, international students who contribute significantly to the University and its mission," the university said.
