TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of the United States, Donald Trump, on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, signaled his intention to lift the sanctions imposed on Russia in order to achieve peace in Ukraine.
However, Trump has ensured that such a decision has not been made so far. The United States and other Western countries have imposed massive economic sanctions on Russia since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated in 2022. Moscow has called the sanctions illegal and has since demanded their removal.
“No, we haven’t lifted any sanctions on anybody… I guess it will be at some point, but right now we haven’t agreed to lift sanctions on anybody,” said Trump, as quoted by RT.com.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested recently for Western countries to lift the sanctions on Russia to reach an “enduring, sustainable” solution to the Ukraine war. “There has to be concessions made by all sides,” he said.
According to him, the European Union should also be involved in discussions if the sanctions are to be lifted, as the institution is also part of those imposing sanctions targeting Russia.
Under Putin's leadership, Russia has continued its invasion in Ukraine since February 24, 2022. Western countries have imposed various sanctions on Russia for its military operation. Most recently, the United States and the United Kingdom on April 12, 2024, prohibited metal-trading exchanges from accepting new aluminum, copper, and nickel produced by Russia, as well as barred such imports, as reported by Reuters.
The European Union has also imposed sanctions on Russia, approving the 13th sanctions package last February to ban almost 200 entities and individuals accused of helping Moscow obtain weapons or being involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children.
