TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – U.S. President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney after the latter criticized American dominance in a speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
Trump responded by saying Canada should be grateful to the United States, arguing that Washington provides many benefits to its northern neighbor. Speaking at Davos, Trump said Canada receives a significant amount of what he described as “freebies” from the U.S.
“Canada lives because of the United States,” Trump said. “Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”
The remarks came a day after Carney delivered a speech criticizing what he described as American “hegemony” and warning of growing fractures in the U.S.-led global system.
“Canada gets a lot of freebies from us, by the way. They should also be grateful, but they're not,” Trump said, as quoted by NDTV. “I saw your Prime Minister yesterday; he wasn't so grateful. They should be grateful to us.”
In his address at the WEF, Carney warned that the world is no longer experiencing a smooth transition but rather a deep rupture in the existing global order dominated by the United States.
“Canadians know that our old, comfortable assumption that our geography and alliance memberships automatically conferred prosperity and security is no longer valid,” Carney said.
“Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition.”
Carney also stressed that middle-power countries such as Canada must strengthen cooperation with one another to protect their interests. He warned that nations that fail to participate in negotiations risk being sidelined.
“If you are not at the table, you are on the men” he said.
The Canadian prime minister further criticized U.S. tariffs related to Greenland and voiced support for Denmark and Greenland’s right to self-determination.
“Canada stands firmly with Greenland and Denmark and fully supports their unique right to determine Greenland's future,” Carney said.
At the same WEF meeting, Trump said his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system would also provide protection for Canada.
Beyond Greenland, Trump has previously suggested that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States and has mocked former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau by referring to him as the “Governor of Canada.”
Although talk of annexation has faded in recent months, Trump recently posted an image on social media showing a map of Canada and Venezuela covered with U.S. flags, implying a complete American takeover of both countries.
Carney delivered his Davos speech after Canada’s Globe and Mail newspaper reported that the Canadian military had prepared a hypothetical response plan in the event of a U.S. invasion.
