TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Iran and impose secondary tariffs if it fails to reach an agreement with Washington on the nuclear program. In his first statement since Iran rejected direct negotiations with Washington last week, Trump said that U.S. and Iranian officials are engaged in talks. However, there were no further details on the content of their discussions.

"If they don't make a deal, there will be bombing," Trump said in a phone interview quoted by Reuters. "It will be bombing the likes of which they have never seen before."

"There's a chance that if they don't make a deal, that I will do secondary tariffs on them like I did four years ago," he added.

Iran responds via Oman to Trump's letter. In the letter, Trump urged Tehran to reach a new nuclear agreement. Meanwhile, Iran rejected direct negotiations with the United States with military threats, according to Tehran's foreign minister.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated the policy on Sunday. "Direct negotiations (with the U.S.) have been rejected, but Iran has always been involved in indirect negotiations, and now too, the Supreme Leader has emphasized that indirect negotiations can still continue," he said.

In an interview with NBC cited by Reuters, Trump threatened to impose secondary tariffs. These tariffs will affect buyers of goods from Russia and Iran. He signed an executive order last week authorizing the tariffs for buyers of Venezuelan oil.

Trump told reporters on Sunday, March 30, 2025, he would decide on secondary tariffs if Tehran rejected the deal. "We'll probably give it a couple of weeks and if we don't see any progress, we're going to put them on. We're not putting them on right now. But if you remember, I did that six years ago, and it worked very well," he said.

So far, Tehran has rejected Trump's warnings to make a nuclear deal or face military consequences.

Western countries accuse Iran of having a secret agenda to develop nuclear weapons capability by enriching uranium to a level of fissile purity above what they say is justifiable for a civilian atomic energy program. Tehran says its nuclear program is purely for civilian energy purposes.
