TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the United States, Donald Trump, has threatened to jail Democratic officials in Illinois who are resisting the mass deportation campaign. This comes a day after armed forces from Texas arrived in Illinois to facilitate the deportation process.
According to Al Jazeera, the largest city in Illinois, Chicago, has been the target of Trump's administration to deport millions of immigrants, resulting in alleged human rights violations and legal issues.
Trump's Demand to Arrest Illinois Officials
President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, stating, "Chicago Mayor should be in jail for failing to protect Ice Officers! Governor Pritzker also!"
Trump's post was a response to the events in Illinois, as the local government obstructed the Trump administration's desire to conduct mass deportations of immigrants there.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker condemned Trump's order to deploy 200 National Guard troops to Illinois. They called this action a militarization and violation of state law, accusing Trump of being authoritarian.
"The federal government has not communicated with us in any way about their troop movements," Pritzker told Al Jazeera reporters in Chicago. "I can’t believe I have to say ‘troop movements’ in an American city, but that is what we’re talking about here."
He then took legal action in an attempt to resist the deployment of the National Guard to his state.
Pritzker posted on X, saying, "What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?" he asked. "We must all stand up and speak out."
Donald Trump's Grand Plan
This is not the first time Donald Trump has deployed the National Guard to a state. As reported by Al Jazeera, he previously attempted to deploy these forces to Oregon and has successfully deployed them to California and Washington, DC.
The Trump administration has also strengthened its intention to carry out the "Protection of the American People Against Invasion" through a Presidential Action issued on the official White House channel.
This release details the various policy aspects that led to tighter immigration policies in the U.S. These policies range from threatening to cut off funding to states that impede law enforcement to forming a national unit to conduct mass deportations.
