TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - High-level delegations from the United States and Russia began a meeting in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, to discuss ending Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and President Putin's Foreign Policy Advisor Yuri Ushakov arrived in the capital city of Riyadh on Monday.
On the other hand, the U.S. will be represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Middle East Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
As reported by Anadolu, the meeting comes after President Donald Trump separately called Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week to end the three-year-long war.
Ukraine was not invited to the meeting, and Zelensky stressed that Ukraine won't accept any deal resulting from the meeting without Kyiv's participation.
Zelensky is reportedly scheduled to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey in the capital city of Ankara today to discuss bilateral relations, the latest developments in Ukraine, and other regional and global issues.
The meeting has strained U.S.-European relations after Trump initiated direct talks with Putin on Ukraine peace negotiations without European involvement.
Additionally, during the Munich Security Conference over the weekend, Keith Kellogg, Trump's special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, confirmed that Europe would not be invited to plan U.S.-Russia peace talks in Ukraine.
Nevertheless, leaders from several major European countries gathered in Paris on Monday at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss transatlantic relations, the situation in Ukraine, potential peace negotiations, and security in Europe.
