TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, its plan to start selling several United States government buildings, including the iconic J. Edgar Hoover Building. The building used to be the headquarters of the FBI in Washington.
In addition, the Robert F. Kennedy Building, which served as the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Justice, will also be sold. The sale of these famous buildings highlights a shift in how Washington manages its real estate portfolio.
The move to sell several government buildings is part of a broader plan by the GSA's Public Building Service. The agency aims to sell or lease government-owned properties that are no longer considered essential to the country's operations.
The agency manages over 440 state-owned buildings across the United States.
"For decades, chronic underfunding has left many of these buildings functionally obsolete and unsuitable for the modern federal workforce. We can no longer assume that funding will materialize to fix these longstanding issues," the agency stated, as reported by politico.com.
The U.S. government buildings that will soon be available for sale include the Hubert H. Humphrey Building, which used to house the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Frances Perkins Building, which was once the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Labor.
A source at the White House, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated that the state-owned buildings set to be sold by the U.S. GSA are considered more cost-effective to sell than to keep and repair. In addition to maintenance costs, there are many other metrics to consider, which makes selling them a better option, such as the age of buildings and their suitability for housing.
