TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The UK braced for more snow, rain, and flooding as severe weather disrupted road and rail travel on Monday, January 6, 2024. These conditions forced airports in northern England to temporarily close their runways, causing dozens of flights to be delayed.
Citing Reuters, the Met Office has issued warnings for snow, ice, and rain across much of the UK. Meanwhile, the UK Environment Agency said flooding was expected in more than 150 locations due to rain and melting snow.
Britain's National Rail also reported that flooding or heavy rain has delayed or canceled dozens of train operations. In that regard, National Highways noted several major roads in northern and central England were also closed due to snow or flooding.
On Monday morning, January 6, Manchester Airport temporarily closed its runway due to heavy snow. This followed a similar move by Liverpool Airport on Sunday, January 5.
“Some departures and arrivals may still experience delays,” Manchester Airport said after the runway reopened, as quoted by Reuters.
The Met Office said some areas of the UK faced the coldest night of the winter so far, with temperatures in parts of Scotland dropping to minus 13.3 degrees Celsius or 8.1 degrees Fahrenheit.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reported that Britain was thrown into chaos after an Arctic blast hit large parts of the country on Saturday. The storm brought heavy snow to hail that halted travel and caused power outages.
With more snow falling throughout Sunday, the cold weather persists, with yellow weather warnings in place in most of the UK.
Emergency services responded to several incidents, and power outages occurred in areas of the Midlands, South West, and South Wales, including Birmingham, Cardiff, and Bristol.
Bristol Airport suspended flights on Saturday evening, due to 'challenging weather,' with further delays expected. Passengers have been advised to contact their airlines for the latest information.
