UK PM Gives Full Support to Ukraine After Meeting Zelensky

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed his country's full support for Ukraine when receiving President Volodymyr Zelensky in London on Saturday local time as reported by Anadolu.

The Ukrainian president arrived in London to meet PM Starmer and attend the summit related to Ukraine on Sunday, March 2, 2025. The summit will be attended by several European leaders.

'You have full backing from the entire United Kingdom (UK), and we will stand with you and Ukraine for as long as it takes,' Starmer said to Zelensky.

He stated that the UK has an 'absolute' and 'unwavering' determination to achieve the shared goals, which is 'sustainable peace in Ukraine based on sovereignty and security.'

Zelensky then thanked Starmer and the British people for their support to Ukraine since the outbreak of the war with Russia in 2022.

As reported by Reuters, the crowd cheered as Zelensky arrived to hold talks with Starmer in his office at Downing Street. This was before the European leaders' summit where the Ukrainian president would discuss peace plans for Ukraine on Sunday.

Meanwhile, a statement from the Prime Minister's office released after the meeting reaffirmed Starmer's support for Ukraine.

'The prime minister reasserts his determination to seek steps to end Russia's illegal war and ensure a fair and sustainable peace that secures Ukraine's sovereignty and security in the future,' the Downing Street spokesperson said in the statement.

Starmer and Zelensky are said to continue their discussions at the summit in London on Sunday. On the same day, the Ukrainian president will also meet with King Charles III.

The meeting took place a day after Zelensky had a heated debate with US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance at the White House.

In the debate, Trump criticized the Ukrainian leader's stance while Zelensky conveyed the support he expected for his country.

In the extraordinary meeting in the Oval Office, Trump also threatened to withdraw support for Ukraine, three years after Russia invaded its smaller neighbor.

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with Zelensky and Trump on Saturday and called for calm in an interview after their altercation at the White House.

'I think beyond the turmoil, everyone needs to be calm, show respect, and gratitude, so that we can move forward concretely because what is at stake is very important,' Macron said in an interview with several newspapers on Sunday.

Macron said Zelensky had informed him that he was willing to 'restore dialogue' with the United States, including regarding an agreement that would give the US access to income from Ukraine's natural resources, but didn't disclose what Trump had said to him in the phone call.

The White House has not commented on Macron's statement.
