TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, announced on Monday the allocation of an additional US$11 million (approximately Rp182.6 billion) to the Gaza Strip.
As reported by Xinhua and quoted by Antara, these funds are intended to immediately support the scaling up of humanitarian operations.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which Fletcher heads, stated that this amount is in addition to the US$9 million allocated last week from the UN's Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for Gaza.
However, Fletcher cautioned that without further contributions to the CERF, crucial aid would not be able to continue reaching those in dire need.
According to OCHA, based on the humanitarian plan for the first 60 days of the ceasefire, the UN and its partners will provide life-saving assistance and services to people throughout the region, wherever they require assistance. This aid will include food, water, healthcare services, shelter supplies, hygiene items, protection support, and other essential aid.
The OCHA office also reported Israel's approval of the additional aid, channeled through the UN's 2720 Mechanism for Gaza, which brings the total incoming aid to 190,000 tons as of Sunday.
"These supplies are across the region -- in Jordan, Egypt, Israel, Cyprus and the West Bank -- and are ready to move," the office stated.
The UN's 2720 Mechanism enables humanitarian partners to register in an application portal and an integrated database where all planned aid shipments for Gaza can be tracked.
For the first time since March, OCHA reported that cooking gas entered the Gaza Strip on Sunday. This shipment also included more tents for refugee families, frozen meat, fresh fruits, flour, and medicines that crossed into Gaza throughout the day.
The office further stated that humanitarian workers can move more freely in many areas within Gaza. Their teams are now reaching people in locations that had been cut off for several months due to violence.
From last Friday to Sunday, monitoring partners of the Palestinian movement noted nearly 310,000 people moving from the southern to the northern Gaza areas and about 23,000 movements in other directions, OCHA said.
