TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday he would meet with Danish officials next week. As reported by Anadolu, this statement comes after Denmark requested negotiations amid increasing tensions following President Donald Trump's threat regarding Greenland.
Rubio was asked by a reporter if he would consider the option of using the US military to take over Greenland.
"I'm not here to talk about Denmark or military intervention. I'll be meeting with them next week. We'll have those conversations with them then," Rubio told reporters on Capitol Hill when asked about the possibility of military intervention in Greenland.
He added that Trump's interest in Greenland is not new.
According to Rubio, the president has raised the issue since his first term, and the previous US administrations have also explored how to acquire Greenland.
This statement comes in line with the Trump administration's stance, which stated that they are considering various options to acquire Greenland, including the possibility of military action, as stated in a White House statement.
"The President and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the U.S. Military is always an option at the Commander in Chief’s disposal," said White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt.
A day after the US military operation in Venezuela resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, Trump on Sunday reiterated the call for the takeover of Greenland for national security interests.
"We need Greenland, from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it," Trump said when asked about the possibility of US action towards Greenland.
Denmark's Threat
On Tuesday evening, Denmark's Minister of Defense and Deputy Prime Minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, said Denmark would spend 88 billion Danish kroner to rearm Greenland due to the "serious security situation we face."
"I hope that the United States also recognizes that fact and is ready to cooperate on our common interest in Arctic security," Poulsen said in a statement as quoted by NBC News.
"Because Denmark would like to continue to be an ally of the United States," he said. "But that requires a mutual willingness to show respect and cooperation."
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and has repeatedly rejected various proposals leading to a transfer of sovereignty to the United States.
Previously, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen urged Trump to stop the threats.
