TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll from the United States' attack on Yemen on Saturday, March 15, 2025, has risen to 53. The Houthi group in Yemen has vowed to retaliate against the attack.

The increased death toll was confirmed by a spokesperson for the Health Ministry led by the Houthi on Sunday. Five children and two women were among the victims, while the number of injured rose to 98, said Anees Alsbahi, a spokesperson for the Health Ministry, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree previously stated on Sunday that the group targeted the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Harry S Truman. The Houthi also targeted U.S. warships with 18 ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as an unmanned aerial vehicle, according to the government TV network Al Masirah. The U.S. has not yet responded to the Houthi's claims. Saree added that the U.S. has launched more than 47 attacks in various regions of Yemen.

In a separate statement, Houthi leader Abdul Malik al Houthi stated that they will respond to the U.S. attack. Abdul Malik al-Houthi said they will target American warships and navy ships with missile attacks. He also said that they have decided to threaten shipments to Israel. The Houthi aim to pressure Israel to allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza.

The Houthi's political bureau called the deadly attack constituted a war crime.

Al-Asbahi revealed that the Saturday attack targeted the capital, Sanaa, and areas in Saada, Al Bayda, and Radaa.

However, after ordering the initial attack, U.S. President Donald Trump said they would use extraordinary deadly force. The attacks will continue until the Houthis stop their attacks on shipments along the crucial maritime corridor in the Red Sea.

The group reaffirmed on Sunday that the naval operations will continue until the blockade of Gaza is lifted and aid is allowed to enter. The Houthi have been launching attacks on shipping containers in response to the war in Gaza since 2023. The group also seeks to defend Palestine.

The Houthi had halted their attacks when the Gaza ceasefire took effect in January. For two months since January, the Houthis have not attacked.

In early March, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the suspension of aid shipments to Gaza. The suspension of aid entry was a step to pressure Hamas to accept an extension of the first stage of the ceasefire agreement, rather than proceeding to the next stage.

On Tuesday, the Houthi announced that they would resume attacks after the deadline for Israel to allow the resumption of aid shipments to Gaza had passed.

On Sunday morning, U.S. Defense Minister Pete Hegseth stated that Washington would launch relentless attacks on the Houthi until they stop targeting U.S. assets and global shipments.

The U.S. and some of its allies have been bombing Yemen with cruise missiles since January 2024, when the war in Gaza was raging. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also announced that U.S. military operations would continue until the group can no longer attack ships. He blamed Iran for supporting the Houthi.
