TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - While seated on a stage arranged for the National Symposium of the Indonesian Science, Technology, and Industry Convention, President Prabowo Subianto outlined several of his flagship programs. Before more than 2,000 rectors, academics, and researchers gathered at the Jakarta International Convention Center on Friday, June 26, 2026, Prabowo explained his administration's performance.
Earlier, he had asked journalists covering the event to leave the room. Jokingly, Prabowo invited reporters to enjoy coffee outside because he wanted to speak heart-to-heart. That day, he spoke for nearly five hours. "I was impressed by the data presented by the President," Nawawi Asmat, Head of the Center for Legal Research at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), told Tempo on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
Nawawi estimated that Prabowo spoke with the aid of more than 200 slides displayed on a giant screen. The topics ranged from geopolitics and the economy to natural resource management. He also spoke about his flagship programs, including the free nutritious meals program and the Red and White village cooperatives. According to Nawawi, the President did not open a question-and-answer session.
Nawawi said Prabowo explained the urgency of providing free nutritious meals to address stunting. According to Nawawi, Prabowo believed the program would succeed because many countries also implement school lunch programs. "He did not discuss at all the rejection of the free nutritious meals program in various regions," he said.
