Vatican: Pope Francis in Stable Condition, but Not Out of Danger

5 hours ago 6

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Vatican reported the condition of Pope Francis on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, remained stable and has not had any new breathing crises. The Pope has been fighting against double pneumonia for three weeks.

Reuters reported the Vatican, in its report on Wednesday, said that the Pope’s prognosis remained “guarded,” meaning it’s not yet out of danger. Pope Francis has also resumed using non-invasive mechanical ventilator overnight after the device was removed during the day. This underscores the Pope's continued difficulty in shaking off the dangerous illness.

When the ventilator device was removed, Pope Francis breathed using high-flow oxygen through a small nasal hose under his nose.

Pope Francis, 88, was taken to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on February 14, 2025, due to a respiratory infection that required consistent care.

Vatican also reported that the Pope was able to call the parish in Gaza for the first time since February 24, 2025, an activity the Catholic Church leader often engaged during the Gaza war.

Pope Francis also carried out some work and spent much of the day in an armchair. The last time Vatican specified that the pop has been able to work was on February 27, 2025.

Pope Francis has not been seen in public since being admitted to the hospital. This is the first absence of the Pope since he began his papacy duties 12 years ago. The doctors treating the Pope cannot say how long His Holiness will be treated like this.

The Pope has missed several church events, including the service on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, or known as Ash Wednesday, to mark the beginning of the 40 days towards Easter. The Pope's duties in the event were then replaced by Cardinal Angelo De Donatis.
