TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vatican on Sunday, March 16, 2025, for the first time published a number of photos of Pope Francis in the hospital since he was admitted due to double pneumonia. In the photos, Pope Francis, 88, is no longer using a breathing aid.

Pope Francis was taken to Gemelli Hospital on February 14, 2025, with several symptoms of a respiratory infection that required further treatment. Since then, Pope Francis has not been seen in public.

Quoted from Reuters, several shared photos show Pope Francis from the back. He sits in a wheelchair facing the altar in a chapel at the hospital where he is being treated.

There is also a photo showing the side of his face and his right hand resting on his lap. There are no signs of him receiving additional oxygen, which has been given to help him breathe.

The Vatican said the photos were taken on Sunday, March 16, 2025, when Pope Francis celebrated mass with several other priests in the chapel.

This is the latest development in Pope Francis' condition, which on Saturday, March 15, 2025, the Vatican said that Pope Francis has gradually improved and no longer frequently uses a ventilator at night to help him breathe.

The Vatican describes Pope Francis as being in stable or improved condition. However, it is not yet known when Pope Francis will be able to leave the hospital as his recovery process is slow.

Pope Francis is prone to lung infections because he once had pleurisy when he was young. Part of his lungs has also been removed.

During his hospitalization, he has received respiratory physiotherapy assistance to help him breathe and physical therapy to help his mobility. In recent years, Pope Francis has been using a wheelchair due to knee and back pain. On Thursday, March 13, 2025, Pope Francis celebrated his 12th year as pope in the hospital.
