TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Venezuela's Acting President Delcy Rodriguez said on Wednesday, July 8, that she would send a letter to King Charles III of Britain requesting the release of around 30 tons of the country's gold reserves.
Rodriguez stated that she aimed to request the release of gold, which had been frozen at the Bank of England due to UK sanctions, to allocate funds to help victims of the devastating earthquake in Venezuela.
Additionally, Rodriguez plans to use the funds to rebuild areas of Venezuela affected by the June 24 earthquake.
"The gold belongs to our people and should be used to address the terrible and tragic consequences caused by the twin earthquakes," Rodriguez said, as reported by Venezuelan state television, citing ANTARA.
Rodriguez said her country needs these sovereign assets to accelerate reconstruction, increase employment, revive economic activity, and restore education services.
He also emphasized the need to restore these assets so that they can be allocated directly for the social welfare of the people affected by the devastating twin earthquakes.
Earlier, Rodriguez had a telephone conversation with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Director Kristalina Georgieva regarding the release of frozen Venezuelan assets.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on June 24, just 39 seconds apart.
The twin earthquakes caused widespread damage and triggered a large-scale humanitarian response at the national and international levels.
