TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian men's national volleyball team secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Qatar (14-25, 25-22, 32-30, 25-27, and 15-13) in Group B of the 2026 AVC Cup Men's Volleyball Tournament on Monday night, Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
This victory marked Alfien Daniel and his teammates' first in the 2026 AVC Cup.
"Appreciation to the boys and the coach. We played better than yesterday against Korea. Coach Toiran was brave. When the first set was difficult to penetrate, he switched to younger players. He brought on Nibras, Alfin, and Gumilar. That changed the game," said Indonesian national team manager Loudry Maspaitella in an official statement on Tuesday.
Indonesia started the match poorly, falling behind 12-4 midway through the set.
Attempting to put on pressure, the Indonesian team was unable to do much and succumbed to a 14-25 defeat in the first set.
However, the game began to improve in the second set after Indonesia maintained a 15-13 lead.
In their superior position, the Garuda team continued to add points to close the set at 25-22.
In the third set, Qatar played better early, gaining point after point.
However, Indonesia was able to play much more determinedly to bring the score to 16-16. The match was intense, with Indonesia finally forcing Qatar to surrender 32-30.
In the fourth set, the game fell to Qatar, who were able to rally to a 15-13 lead.
Indonesia managed to force the score to a 25-25 draw, but Qatar ultimately won 27-25.
In the deciding set, Indonesia played much more composedly and made it difficult for Qatar to withstand their attacks. Indonesia won 15-13.
This victory temporarily puts Indonesia at the bottom of the group with two points from two matches.
Indonesia will next face Thailand on Tuesday at 7:30 PM WIB.
