VP Gibran Envisions Halal Industry as Catalyst for Indonesia's Development

6 hours ago 10

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka is optimistic that developing the halal industry is one way to turn Indonesia into a developed country. He mentions the huge opportunity for Indonesia, with a 245 million Muslim population.

"Indonesia has 245 million Muslims, one of the largest Muslim populations in the world. This means that we have market power in our own country," said Gibran in a monologue video uploaded on his YouTube account, GibranTV, on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

However, according to Gibran,  a large Muslim population alone is not enough; it must be accompanied by economic independence and a robust halal industry. This includes independence in Sharia finance, halal food and beverage industry, Muslim fashion, halal cosmetics, Muslim-friendly tourism, and Islamic songs, films, and content.

The Vice President mentions that in 2024, Indonesia was ranked third in the Global Islamic Economy Index. "Our exports of halal products continue to increase. Over the past six years, growth has reached seven percent," Gibran said.

Moreover, he said that 15 of the world's top 30 halal production companies are from Indonesia. According to Gibran, this shows Indonesia's enormous potential in the halal industry.

However, he highlights that Indonesia has not yet become a major player in the global halal supply chain. This can be seen from Indonesia's position as the eighth-largest halal product exporter in the world. Meanwhile, Gibran said, other countries with much smaller Muslim populations can lead and rank first.

"This means that this sector is not only of interest to Muslim countries, but also to other countries around the world. It is considered one of the most attractive sectors," he said.

Gibran mentions that the halal lifestyle and branding are becoming more widespread worldwide. In 2022, global Muslim consumer expenditure reached US$2.3 trillion. He projects that this figure will continue to increase to US$3.1 trillion by 2027.

He believes the biggest potential lies in the halal food and beverage sector at 43 percent and Muslim fashion at 23 percent. "Many countries are targeting this, so we must move quickly and not be left behind. In order to provide the greatest benefit for the nation, we must maximize the local potential to take advantage of the global Sharia market space," said Gibran.
