TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka highlighted the success of Indonesia’s Standard Quick Response Code (QRIS) as an affordable and effective digital payment tool during the G20 Summit’s plenary session in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, who accompanied him at the summit, said the Vice President also underscored the need for global financial reforms to better support developing nations.

Without structural changes to international financing systems, he warned, developing economies will continue to face fiscal constraints that undermine long-term growth.

According to Airlangga, Indonesia is calling for fairer financing through debt relief, blended finance, and green-transition support.

“Equal and predictable access to financing is essential for strengthening economic resilience and accelerating sustainable development,” he said in a press briefing after the first day of the summit, citing Gibran’s intervention.

Gibran also emphasized the role of simple, inclusive digital innovations. He pointed to QRIS as a proven low-cost digital payment solution that has gained traction not only in Indonesia but also in several Asian economies, including Japan and South Korea.

The model, he said, could serve as a global reference for accelerating cross-border payment integration.

“He highlights the success of simple digital tools such as QR codes, which have been widely adopted in Asia, and encourages the G20 to begin discussions on the intelligence economy amid rapid financial-technology development,” Airlangga noted.

Gibran further argued that global financial reforms must be aligned with more inclusive governance of emerging technologies.

Indonesia urged the G20 to launch a dialogue on the “economy of intelligence” and explore a governance framework for artificial intelligence, given its growing influence on global economic and financial systems.

President Prabowo Subianto appointed Vice President Gibran to lead the Indonesian delegation at this year’s summit.

“The G20 schedule in South Africa coincides with several of the President’s domestic agendas. Therefore, the Vice President will represent him at the summit,” Cabinet Secretary Teddy said in an official statement on Friday, November 21, 2025.

The government also dispatched Deputy Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Lodewijk Freidrich Paulus as a special envoy to meet South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and formally deliver President Prabowo’s letter of absence.

The two-day G20 Summit, held on November 22–23 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, brought together world leaders to address global priorities.

Representing President Prabowo, Gibran delivered Indonesia’s positions and held several bilateral meetings with leaders of partner countries to strengthen relations and cooperation.
