TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka touched on various conflicts around the world, including in Gaza, Palestine, during his speech at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday, November 22, 2025. He called on world leaders not to normalize human suffering that could actually be prevented.
In the second session of the G20 Summit attended by dozens of heads of state, Gibran stated that the current disasters are not just natural, but many other disasters are a result of human actions. "We see this in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Sahel, and many other regions, where conflicts have destroyed homes, taken away people's hopes, and livelihoods," Gibran said as quoted by Antara.
Gibran highlighted that the tragedies and humanitarian disasters serve as a reminder to place humanity at the heart of global governance. According to him, world leaders must not allow human suffering to become a new normal. "The world must not allow and normalize human suffering that can actually be prevented from becoming the new normal," he said.
Gibran added that the group of countries in the G20, representing 85 percent of the world's gross domestic product (GDP), has a moral obligation to lead by example. "The G20 has a moral obligation to lead by example, to ensure that growth and resilience are two sides of the same coin, promoting hope, prosperity, and justice for all," Gibran said.
In the second session of the G20 Summit, world leaders discussed the theme focusing on building a resilient world, which includes disaster issues, climate change, just energy transition, and food systems. Gibran will also deliver a speech in the third session addressing decent work and the governance of artificial intelligence. The third session will also cover critical minerals, which are proposed and a focus of Indonesia's interests in this meeting.
