TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A celebration parade was held in several cities on the West Bank on Tuesday to rejoice in the Western recognition of the State of Palestine and to show solidarity with the residents of the Gaza Strip.
Hundreds of Palestinians, along with international activists, took part in the parade at Al-Manara Square in Ramallah. They waved Palestinian flags, accompanied by loud chants and music, as reported by Xinhua, cited by Antara.
A large poster hanging high read that the event was held to support Gaza and its prisoners, "in support of Gaza and the prisoners and in rejection of the war of extermination," and "in appreciation of the international positions supporting our people's right to freedom and independence."
Sabri Saidam, a member of Fatah's central committee, told Xinhua during the event that this moment was a day of joy for the Palestinian people and that they respect the countries supporting Palestine.
"To end the war in Gaza is a priority," Saidam said.
"We have to engage. We have to stop the war. That's number one. Then engage in the building of Gaza ... We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we are determined. That's our future. This is our identity. That's our dignity," he said.
Luisa Morgantini, the former vice president of the European Parliament, traveled to the West Bank and attended the parade. She told Xinhua that Europe's recognition was "an important step."
"We feel that Palestine must be free. Palestinians should choose for themselves what they want," Morgantini said.
"They are able to build, build their own state," she said.
In the interview, Morgantini urged Western countries to do more to support the freedom of Palestine and its right to self-determination.
France was the first G7 country to recognize the State of Palestine. It was followed by the United Kingdom, Portugal, Australia, Canada, and six other European countries. This is in support of a two-state solution. Thus far, more than 150 UN member states have recognized the State of Palestine.
A recent UN investigation concluded that Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza, where over 65,380 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023. Most of the casualties were civilians, especially women and children.
