TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indian universities are set to establish a campus in Indonesia. The plan was agreed upon by delegations from both nations during a meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
According to Prabowo, he and Modi have reached an agreement regarding the establishment of the campus. "Both Prime Minister Modi and I support the establishment of the Indian Institute of Management, as well as the possibility of an Indian Institute of Technology in Indonesia," Prabowo said in a joint press statement.
Indonesia and India signed an agreement to bolster educational cooperation during the bilateral meeting. At the same time, Prabowo expressed hope that Indonesia could increase the number of its students studying in India.
"We are confident that these agreements can be implemented promptly to yield real results and benefits for the people of both countries," said the former defense minister.
PM Modi is currently on a three-day visit to Indonesia. He has been in Jakarta since Monday, July 6, 2026. In addition to his itinerary in the capital, Modi will also travel to Yogyakarta to visit the Prambanan Temple.
President Prabowo formally welcomed Modi during a state ceremony at the Merdeka Palace on Tuesday. They also held a closed-door bilateral meeting alongside their respective delegations, followed by a luncheon.
A number of strategic memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between Indonesia and India were signed at the Merdeka Palace. The meeting ultimately yielded 16 agreements between the two nations.
In the presence of President Prabowo and PM Modi, one of the exchanged cooperation documents detailed a partnership between the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Indian Space Research Organisation. This pact covers collaboration in space research.
In addition, Indonesia and India announced 15 other documents spanning cooperation across several fields, ranging from defense, energy, and health to culture and technology.
