TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The instant messaging platform WhatsApp is currently working on a new feature that will enable users to share music or songs from Spotify directly to their status.
This feature was first discovered in the WhatsApp beta update for Android 2.25.8.3, which is available on the Google Play Store.
According to WABetaInfo, this feature will introduce additional options for users when sharing songs from Spotify.
Users will have the ability to post a song as a WhatsApp status update, in addition to the existing option to send it as a message to contacts or groups.
"When sharing music from Spotify, users will see an additional option to post it as a WhatsApp status update, alongside the usual option to send it as a message to a contact or a group. If users select this option, WhatsApp will process and generate a preview for the shared track, which will be displayed in the status update," the report stated, as quoted on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
Going forward, WhatsApp will display a preview of the song in the status, featuring details such as the song title, artist name, and album cover.
"The preview will include essential details such as the song title, artist name, and album cover, providing an engaging visual representation of the shared music," the report further explained.
This feature works similarly to how music is shared on Instagram Stories, where users who view the status will be able to access the song directly through the ‘Play on Spotify’ button.
With this update, WhatsApp aims to create a more interactive music-sharing experience while also making it easier for users to discover new songs without having to search for them manually.
WhatsApp has emphasized that they do not have access to the songs users share, in accordance with their end-to-end encryption policy. Only the intended audience can view the shared content.
Consequently, neither WhatsApp nor any third party can view the songs shared in a user's status update.
"This makes status updates a secure way to share music-related content privately with your audience," wrote the report.
At present, the Spotify music-sharing feature on WhatsApp status remains in the development phase, and no official release date has been announced.
"it will be available in a future update," WABetaInfo reported.
