Philadelphia Phillies star Nick Castellanos got into it with a drunken fan after Friday's loss to the Reds - and now details have been released over exactly what led to the furious back-and-forth.

The incident occurred at the end of Cincinnati's 9-6 win over Philly at Citizens Bank Park, just seconds after Bryson Stott had fouled out to finish the game.

As Stott returned to the dugout, it appears a fan who had enjoyed a little too much beer on July 4th decided to abuse the second baseman, who was then defended heavily by his teammate - and elder statesman - Castellanos.

According to Phillies senior video producer Jace Kaleikau: 'I was right there and a drunk fan came all the way down by the dugout and was screaming at Stott for getting the last out.

'I would have been shocked if someone didn't stand up for him. The fan crossed multiple lines, all while being like 5 feet away.'

In a clip shared to social media, Castellanos can be seen looking at the fan from the dugout as the angry scene unfolds.

Castellanos got into it with the fan and directed him to the exit in a furious back-and-forth

He then shouts back at him, before pointing toward the exit - presumably directing him to leave Stott alone and head home.

In another post, Kaleikau added: 'If there was ever a time when a fan went too far that warranted a response from a player, this was it.'

It was a good day other than that for Castellanos, who hit his 11th home run of the season to put Philadelphia 3-0 up, a lead they ultimately failed to hold on to.

Philly's lead evaporated in the third inning when Cincinnati notched five runs, and the home team weren't able to work their way back into the game.

Overall it was a good day for the Phillies star, who hit his 11th home run of the season on July 4

Despite the result, and the Mets' win over the Yankees, Philadelphia still holds a slender lead at the top of the NL East, just 0.5 games up on New York.

It has been a relatively rough period for the team though, with four wins and six losses in their last 10 games.

Saturday represents an opportunity to right Friday's wrongs though, with the second of a three-game set taking place at Citizens Bank Park.
