Zoe Saldana Wins First Oscar, Shouts for Her Mother in Tears

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Zoe Saldana won her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film 'Emilia Perez'. She was moved to tears as she went up on stage to accept the Oscar at the event held at Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles on Sunday, March 2, 2025 local time.

According to a report from People, before starting her speech, Saldaña tearfully shouted, "Mami! Mami!" and waved to her mother. She then told the audience, "My mom is here; my whole family's here. I am floored by this honor."

The 46-year-old actress then spoke about her family and her grandmother, shedding tears during her speech. She said her grandmother came to America in 1961.

“My grandmother came to this country in 1961, I am a proud child of immigrant parents, with dreams and dignity and hard working hands and I am first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy award and I know I will not be the last,” she said in her rousing winning speech.

Zoe Saldana dedicated her award for 'Emilia Perez' to her grandmother. “The fact I got an award where I got to sing and speak in Spanish, my grandmother would be so delighted. This is for her," she revealed.

Zoe Saldana competed in the Best Supporting Actress category of Oscar 2025 with Felicity Jones from The Brutalist, Ariana Grande from Wicked, Monica Barbaro from A Complete Unknown, and Isabella Rosselini from Conclave.

The Spanish-language crime drama and musical film, 'Emilia Perez', featured Zoe Saldana as Rita, a lawyer who is tasked with helping the main character obtain gender reaffirmation surgery to escape from a life as a cartel boss.

After this victory, she thanked the Academy Awards for recognizing the quiet heroism and strength in a woman like her character in the film. She also thanked director Jacques Audiard for giving her the opportunity to showcase her skills in this role.

“You are forever a beloved character in my life, thank you for taking the interest and use it for being so curious about these women to tell this story," she said, as quoted by Deadline.
