'28 Years Later' Makes a Comeback: The Dystopian Thriller That Reignites a Cult Classic

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 20 years after the Rage virus first devastated England, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland return with 28 Years Later, the latest chapter in the post-apocalyptic horror saga.

According to People, the film continues the storyline from 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007), while also launching a new trilogy. A follow-up titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is already in development, with Nia DaCosta attached as director.

Unlike the previous films, which focused on the chaos and aftermath of the outbreak, 28 Years Later delves into the long-term consequences of the collapse. The plot follows a determined young boy who ventures from his remote island home in search of a doctor to save his ailing mother.

The film boasts an impressive cast, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O'Connell. Although original star Cillian Murphy does not reprise his on-screen role, he remains involved as an executive producer. Producer Andrew Macdonald has also hinted at a possible return for Murphy in the next installment.

28 Years Later is slated to hit theaters on June 20, 2025, marking the beginning of the trilogy’s next era.

Nearly 30 years after the Rage virus decimated civilization, 28 Years Later brings viewers back to a now deserted and isolated England.

Amid the ruins, a small group of survivors clings to life on a remote island, living under strict quarantine with limited supplies. The island stands as one of the last relatively safe havens from the infected.

The story follows a young boy who dares to cross the water to the mainland in a desperate attempt to find a doctor who can save his gravely ill mother.

But his journey quickly becomes more perilous than expected. Not only does the virus still haunt the abandoned cities, but he also encounters humans surviving in brutal and unexpected ways.

Rather than focusing solely on zombie-style suspense, 28 Years Later explores deeper psychological and societal themes. The film reflects on long-term trauma, isolation, and the transformation of society after catastrophe.

Adding to its gritty tone, much of the film was shot using the iPhone 15 Pro Max, enhancing its raw and immersive visual style.
