5 Countries Offering Marriage Incentives; Japan and Italy Included

5 hours ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar recently highlighted the downward trend of marriage in Indonesia. According to him, the flagging interest in getting married among Indonesian youths is a problem that must be addressed.

The minister underscores France, as one of the countries that give its citizens incentives to get married and have children. France also covers childbirth costs and scholarships for children.

Here is the list of countries that give marriage incentives to their citizens:

China

China is attempting to recover from its one-child policy in the past, which affects the country's current birth rate. Part of the efforts is by offering incentives of 1,000 yuan, or around Rp2.2 million, for marriages involving women aged 25 or lower. This policy aims to encourage earlier marriage and childbirth. The incentive is part of the national strategy to address an aging population and a slowing regeneration.

Hungary

This country encourages population growth through a government policy that offers interest-free loans. Newlyweds receive a loan of 30,590 euros, or the equivalent of Rp583.58 million, which will be waived if they have three children.

Couples with two children also receive debt relief and subsidized loans. This measure aims to encourage large families and directly increase the birth rate.

Italy

Rural areas of Italy, such as Candela and Dormina, have experienced a population drop and gender imbalance. To address this, the government offers incentives of up to 2,000 euros, or the equivalent of Rp38 million, to not only newlyweds but also singles and families willing to settle in town.

This policy aims to revive local communities by encouraging the formation of new families and balancing the demographic structure in areas rich in history but experiencing a continuous decline in population.

Japan

Despite being known for its advanced technology and culture, Japan is facing a serious decline in the birth rate. To address this issue, some rural areas offer incentives to foreign residents who marry Japanese women.

Criteria to meet include willingness to live in rural areas or towns with a small population, readiness to build a family and settle down, and being under 45 years of age. The couple will receive financial assistance of 500,000 yen to 1 million yen, or Rp55 million to Rp110 million. In addition, Japan also provides access to low-interest home loans and family subsidies.

South Korea

South Korea is facing gender imbalance, especially in rural areas. The government offers marriage incentives to foreign residents who marry South Korean women and are willing to settle there. The form of incentives includes a marriage grant of 10 million won, or Rp118 million.

However, recipients must be willing to live in rural areas for several years, have stable financial conditions or employment, and participate in cultural and language integration programs to completion.
