5 Trainees Die During Military Training for Indonesia's Cooperative Program

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Five candidates selected to manage Indonesia's Red and White Village Cooperatives and Red and White Fishermen's Village Cooperatives have died while undergoing mandatory military training, the Ministry of Defense confirmed on Saturday, June 27.

The latest fatalities were reported on Friday, bringing the total number of deaths among participants in the government's Indonesian Development Mobilizer Graduates (SPPI) program to five.

The Defense Ministry, the national selection committee, and the SPPI program organizers expressed condolences over the deaths of the trainees.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased," said Major General Ketut Gede Wetan Pastia, head of the Defense Ministry's Human Resources Development Agency, at the ministry's headquarters in Jakarta on Saturday.

Ketut identified one of the latest victims as Nola Dya Sari, who was enrolled at the National Defense Education Unit in Kalimantan.

According to the ministry, Nola attended sociology and plantation management classes on Friday, June 26, without reporting any health problems. At around 06:45 PM Western Indonesia Time, she complained of shortness of breath and a fever.

Medical personnel at the training center provided initial treatment before transferring her to the emergency department at Singkawang Hospital. She was later referred to Abdul Aziz Regional Hospital in Singkawang for further treatment.

During treatment, Nola suffered cardiac arrest. Doctors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and cardioversion, but were unable to revive her.

"Despite extensive medical efforts, the patient's condition could not be restored, and she was pronounced dead at 09:03 PM," Ketut said.

He said Nola had passed the mandatory health screening before entering the program, although her medical records noted that she was overweight.

The ministry said the exact cause of death remains under investigation. Ketut added that participant health has become a top priority following instructions from Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin. The ministry is now working with the Health Ministry to strengthen medical assistance, particularly in preventing, detecting, and treating lung diseases and infectious illnesses at training centers.

The ministry also confirmed the death of Muhammad Rifki Renaldi Gunawan, another candidate manager for the Red and White Village Cooperatives program who was undergoing training under the III/Siliwangi Regional Military Command.

According to medical records and a special report, Rifki died from a lung infection with complications. His medical history also included hypertension and obesity, which are being reviewed as part of the medical evaluation.

The latest two deaths followed three earlier fatalities that the Defense Ministry had previously confirmed.

Novia Rahmadhani Sihotang died on June 23 while attending training at the Indonesian Air Force's Doctrine, Education, and Training Development Command Language Center in Jakarta. She had a history of tuberculosis.

Anisa Muyassaroh died on June 18 after suffering heat stroke during training at the Mulawarman Regional Military Command Education Unit in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.

Yonanda Muhammad Taufiq died of cardiac arrest on June 17 while participating in training at the Indonesian Army Combat Training Center in Baturaja, South Sumatra.

The five participants were undergoing defense and management training as part of preparations to become managers of the government's Red and White Village Cooperatives and Red and White Fishermen's Village Cooperatives, a nationwide initiative aimed at strengthening village- and community-based cooperatives.
