TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Almost every hotel provides complimentary amenities that can be used during the stay and even taken home. The brands vary, sometimes luxury hotels offer luxurious and high-quality products. These include shampoo, shower gel, conditioner, lotion, toothbrush and toothpaste, moisturizer, and mouthwash.
However, among these amenities, there is one simple item that can be used in various ways, namely the shower cap. It may not be as luxurious as other amenities, but it can be utilized for purposes other than protecting the hair. Here are six ways to utilize a shower cap as reported by Readers Digest:
1. Dough Rising
Melissa Fallon, a recipe developer and cake blogger behind the website Design Eat Repeat, says that a shower cap is ideal for dough rising as it fits better over the bowl compared to plastic wrap. The shower cap provides room for the dough to rise while releasing gas, thanks to its domed top.
According to Fallon, bread requires a warm and moist environment, and essentially a shower cap creates a small, moist greenhouse. As the shower cap is not safe for food, it should not directly touch the food. Therefore, Fallon suggests using a large enough bowl for the dough to rise without touching the cap, yet small enough so the cap is not too thin to tear.
2. Shoe Covering
A study in the Journal of Applied Microbiology found millions of bacteria particles, including dirt, on the bottom of our shoes. A shower cap can be used to wrap shoes to keep clothes free from dirt and potential contamination. It can also be used to cover shoes worn by guests at home.
3. Keeping Items Dry
When going to the beach or pool and not having enough time to fully dry swimwear, a shower cap can be used. Roll up the wet swimwear with a sturdy, waterproof shower cap so that water does not seep and dampen other items. Remember to dry the cap upon returning home to prevent bacteria or mold.
4. Craft Use
For parents with children who enjoy crafting, a shower cap can be used during clean-up or to line a paint tray, eliminating the need to dispose of the tray after the children finish painting.
5. Covering Leftover Food
Leftover food can quickly become dirty or spoiled if not properly covered. To prevent this, a shower cap can be used. This item provides a much better cover than aluminum foil or plastic wrap, and it can be reused.
6. Storing Herbs
According to Alton Brown, a food scientist and cookbook author, a shower cap can be used to keep stored herbs in the refrigerator fresher for longer. Before covering, rinse and dry the herbs thoroughly, then store them in a bucket-shaped container with about 2.5 centimeters of water. By covering the herbs with a shower cap, it can prevent ethylene gas from fruits and vegetables from escaping, and protect the herbs from harsh, dry cold by creating a comfortable greenhouse effect.
In addition to the shower cap, complimentary hotel shampoo can also be used to clean makeup brushes. Toothbrushes can be used to clean jewelry, keys, or anything that needs scrubbing. Even cotton balls and swabs can be used to clean hard-to-reach and dusty compartments.
