TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korea is appealing for more than its entertainment industry. Foreign tourists around the globe flock to this East Asian country to experience its culture and attractive tourist destinations. Among the most popular tourist spots, Jeju Island is worth considering.
Located 130 kilometers off the southern coast of Korea, the 1,846-square-kilometer island offers natural beauty, cultural richness, and tempting dishes. Do you know which places to visit while on this island?
Here are ideas for a 5-day Jeju Island itinerary, as cited from Pelago and Agoda.
Day One
Flights from major cities, such as Busan or Seoul, are one of the most common ways to get to Jeju Island. Upon arrival at Jeju International Airport, prepare yourself to connect with the surrounding nature.
Jeju is well known for its refreshing natural landscapes, such as waterfalls. Some waterfalls that can be visited are Cheonjiyeon Waterfall and Jeongbang Waterfall. Reserve some energy to explore after breathing in the fresh air around the waterfall area, which can be continued by wandering through Manjanggul Cave, one of the longest lava tube caves in the world.
This UNESCO heritage site was formed from volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago and is home to formations of stalagmites, stalactites, and lava rock that are awe-inspiring. Unfortunately, tourists are temporarily not allowed to enter due to construction. The cave is scheduled to reopen in August 2025.
Day Two
In addition to waterfalls and caves, let's shift briefly to the northern coastal area of Jeju to rediscover natural rock formations. One is Yongduam Rock, a 10-meter-high dragon-head-shaped rock. Spend time on the beach while admiring the volcanic rocks swept by the waves. Capture this natural wonder amidst the refreshing sea breeze.
Next, replenish your energy by tasting local cuisine at Dongmun Traditional Market. Each stall offers a variety of South Korean specialties, ranging from snacks such as hotteok (sweet pancakes) to seafood dishes. For dinner, Black Pork Street in Jeju City is an option for finding grilled black pork dishes that will make your mouth water.
Day Three
The itinerary on Jeju Island would not be complete without a visit to see Jusangjeollidae. Here, visitors will be amazed by the cliffs that display neatly arranged hexagonal rock formations reminiscent of beehives. If you enjoy trekking, explore the Jeju Olle Trail, which consists of 27 routes and seven sub-routes. Ever dreamed of picking tangerines? Visit Hallabong and join a private tour to experience the sensation of picking citrus fruit.
Day Four
After days of exploring the coastal areas, we moved to the mountains on Jeju Island's fourth day. Halla Mountain, the highest peak on the Korean peninsula, soaring 1,950 meters, is one of the favorite destinations for mountain enthusiasts to find unrivaled panoramas.
If you are still not satisfied with the offerings in the coastal areas of Jeju, Udo Island is the most suitable option. You can walk or ride a bike while enjoying the beautiful coastline by taking a 15-minute ferry ride.
Day Five
The last day on Jeju Island concludes with a journey along the coastline. Seongsan Ilchulbong is renowned as a spot to capture the sunrise's golden hue. If you head to Geumneung Beach, you will be greeted by a vast expanse of fine white sand and clear waters. A short walk will take you to Hyeopjae Beach, which is adorned with pine trees. This beach is perfect for closing the day while indulging in the sight of the sunset.
