TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Valeria Marquez, a beauty content creator and model from Mexico, was shot and killed during a live broadcast from her salon in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, on Monday, May 13, 2025. She was known for actively sharing beauty and lifestyle content on TikTok and Instagram, with more than 200,000 followers.
Tragedy Recorded in Live Broadcast
According to the People report, the shooting took place around 18:30 local time at Blossom Beauty Lounge, Marquez's salon. In the official report, the Jalisco Prosecutor's Office stated, "According to the initial investigations state that a man entered the establishment and fired a gun at her."
At the time of the incident, Marquez was doing a live broadcast on TikTok. In widely circulated videos on social media, she was seen holding her chest and then falling. Medical personnel who arrived at the scene declared Marquez dead on the spot.
Police Investigate Perpetrator and Motive
The Jalisco Prosecutor's Office reported that police officers and prosecutors immediately processed the crime scene and gathered information to identify the perpetrator or those involved. A team from the Jalisco Forensic Science Institute collected evidence and took Marquez's body for autopsy and the identification process by the family.
As reported by the Daily Mail, the autopsy of Marquez's body will be conducted within a few hours after her death. As of now, there is no further information from the prosecutor's office on whether this case will be categorized as femicide.
In her final Instagram post, Marquez shared several photos. One post was a mirror selfie on Instagram Stories and was uploaded just a few hours before news of her death spread. Since the sad news spread, the comment sections on her Instagram and TikTok accounts have been flooded with condolences from her followers.
Violence against Women in Mexico
Mexico has long faced the issue of violence against women. In a recent report, as cited in The Mirror UK, the country is recorded as one of the four countries with the highest femicide rates in Latin America and the Caribbean, alongside Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia. Jalisco itself ranks sixth out of 32 states in Mexico in the number of murder cases.
Violence against women in Mexico occurs in various forms, ranging from harassment on the streets to acid attacks and brutal murders. Although it is not yet known whether Marquez's murder is related to gender-based violence or local conflict, this case reinforces concerns about the safety of women in both public and private spaces.
Wave of Political Violence
Just a few days before the murder of Valeria Marquez, a mayoral candidate from the Morena party, Yesenia Lara Gutierrez, was shot and killed along with three of her supporters, including her daughter, during a campaign in Veracruz. The incident occurred during a live broadcast on Facebook. As reported by the Daily Mail, the shooting took place as Gutierrez greeted residents, including a woman carrying a child.
Veracruz Governor, Rocio Nahle, stated in a press conference, "No office or position is worth a person’s life," promising to follow up on the case as an act of terrorism. Gutierrez became the second mayoral candidate to be killed in Veracruz during this year's campaign, following the murder of German Anuar Valencia on April 29.
According to President Claudia Sheinbaum in her press conference on Monday, May 12, the central government is collaborating with state authorities to ensure the safety of the upcoming June 1 election. "We're coordinating, particularly with the Secretary of Security, and with all the support needed during this electoral period from Veracruz and Durango," she said.
