TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Acer becomes the first laptop manufacturer to raise the prices of its products in the United States due to the new import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
As reported by The Verge, the price of Acer laptops is reportedly set to increase by 10 percent starting next month.
"We think 10pc probably will be the default price increase because of the import tax. It’s very straightforward," said Acer CEO and Chair, Jason Chen, referring to the tariffs imposed on imported goods from China.
While the majority of tech companies have yet to announce their response to this policy, Acer has made the decision to raise prices since last week and will soon implement it. However, the increase will not apply to desktops, as Acer has already moved its production location outside of China.
Acer is currently considering similar options for its laptop production, including the possibility of relocating manufacturing to the United States. Currently, most of the world's laptops are still assembled in China, including products from US-based companies such as Apple, Dell, and HP.
Meanwhile, The Telegraph reported that several companies may use these new import tariffs as a reason to raise prices by more than 10%. In addition to Acer, Apple, Dell, and HP, other laptop manufacturers such as Lenovo, Asus, and Razer may follow suit.
As for Framework, a modular laptop manufacturer, they stated that these new import tariff policies may not have a significant impact on their main products, the Framework Laptops and Mainboards, which have been produced in Taiwan.
"Some of our modules are manufactured in China, so we are taking this into account for future module pricing for US customers in the Framework Marketplace as we also continue to diversify our supply base," said Framework CEO Nirav Patel.
