TEMPO.CO, Karanganyar - Indonesian Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq announced on Tuesday, May 13, that administrative penalties have been issued to 343 final waste processing sites (TPA) across the country that are using open dumping systems. One of the regions facing sanctions is Karanganyar Regency.
"Yes, as of today we have issued administrative sanctions due to open dumping, and this includes the Head of Karanganyar Regency, totaling 343 landfill units," said Hanif during his working visit to Karanganyar Regency on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
Hanif assured that these 343 waste processing sites will now be under close monitoring for six months. He has also instructed the heads of Provincial Environmental Agencies to oversee the waste processing sites at the local government (regency/city) level.
"We have given a six-month timeframe to all local leaders (regents/mayors) throughout Indonesia to improve their waste management systems. Significant efforts have been given deadlines through ministerial directives. If these can be implemented, we hope the waste problem will be resolved," he said.
From the monitoring conducted, Hanif revealed that some waste processing sites have progressed to the investigation stage, and in some cases, individuals have even been declared suspects. He expressed his concern about this, stating, "But this is a country governed by law that must prioritize environmentally friendly concepts in waste management."
According to the Minister, the government is taking the issue of waste management very seriously. President Prabowo Subianto has also ordered accelerated measures, including the construction of waste-to-energy facilities for cities that produce up to a thousand tons of waste per day. Additionally, a Waste Handling Task Force is being formed throughout Indonesia.
"This aligns with the proposals from the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development. Furthermore, there is also waste management using environmentally friendly energy, in accordance with the proposal from the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources," he said.
He added that all the proposals from the ministers will be combined into an initial permit that will be drafted by the Minister of Environment. This also follows the President's directive, received through the Minister of State Secretariat on Friday, May 9, 2025.
"We are bringing together all the necessary elements in waste management. The President, through the Minister of State Secretariat, hopes that this drafting will be completed as soon as possible so that it can be put into action and implemented across the country," he explained.
He stated that they are also taking corrective actions regarding waste management throughout the country. According to him, this is important for building a responsible culture. He also did not rule out the possibility of implementing stricter enforcement measures if necessary.
"If the administrative sanctions that we have given to the 343 waste processing sites throughout the country are not properly addressed, we will consider taking stricter enforcement measures afterward. There are two levels of sanctions, including additional sanctions if these initial administrative sanctions are not followed by all local governments (regencies/cities)," he said.
