TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, did not answer the summons of both the anti-corruption agency and prosecutors, who are investigating the martial law decree issued earlier this month. The martial law decree issued by Yoon lasted for six hours.

Yoon did not appear at the summons requested by several high-ranking officials at the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) scheduled for Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at 10 a.m. Yonhap news agency reported last weekend that Yoon also ignored the CIO summons, but a source at the CIO said they would wait for Yoon this Christmas and would continue to evaluate the case before issuing an arrest warrant for Yoon.

A source at the CIO said they had not received any news or documents that had been scheduled for legal consultation from Yoon. The CIO will then evaluate and decide what steps to take next.

Yonhap news agency reported in its report that Yoon also ignored the summons of prosecutors on December 15, 2024, who were investigating the martial law declaration. Seok Dong-Hyeon, a lawyer and long-time friend of President Yoon, told reporters on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, that Yoon would not attend the CIO's summons on December 25, 2024, which wanted to interrogate him. Seok did not explain the reason why Yoon did not want to comply with the authorities' summons.

Yoon's attitude of continuously avoiding summons from South Korean authorities who wanted to interrogate him has prompted the opposition to call for Yoon to be detained. They are worried that Yoon could potentially destroy evidence.

In his televised speech on December 7, 2024, or four days after the imposition of martial law, Yoon Suk Yeol said that his party would not avoid legal responsibility for the actions he took. Yoon was impeached by parliament on December 14, 2024, for imposing martial law. Furthermore, the Constitutional Court will decide whether the impeachment of Yoon is valid or not or whether it will restore Yoon to his power.
