Two Aussie tennis legends have questioned the relevance of the upcoming 'Battle of the Sexes' match between polarising star Nick Kyrgios and women's world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Set to be played in Dubai on December 28, the exhibition clash will look to mirror the historic on-court battle between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in 1973.

In a bombshell result at the time, King won in straight sets at the Houston Astrodome against Riggs, 55.

Next month, Kyrgios will be reportedly limited to a single serve, while Sabalenka's court size will be reduced by nine per cent.

Former Aussie doubles star Rennae Stubbs - who won six grand slam titles in her career - feels the pending match will be a pointless exercise.

'They are saying this has a significant place in history... yeah, the one 50 years ago was important, when it was women trying to fight for equality and women's rights in the US. That's when it was important,' she said on her own podcast.

'No one gives a f*** what is happening with Aryna Sabalenka and Nick Kyrgios.

'The only reason they are putting this on is because their management company has gone, 'We're going to make a bit of money here.'

'But what is in this for women's tennis? 'Nick Kyrgios, unless he is really hurt and can't run at all, he is going to win this match easily. It is just a fact.

'Male tennis players, especially someone as good as Nick Kyrgios, even if he is playing at 50 per cent, he is going to win that match.

'It just doesn't make sense to me. Is Sabalenka going to be serious? Is it going to be like a joke?'

Former Australian doubles star Paul McNamee was on the same page, pointing out the proposed on-court changes clearly favour Sabalenka.

'Well... changing the dimensions of the court to being a smaller target for the guy and not letting him have a first serve says everything you need to know about this, to be honest,' he tweeted on X.

It comes as Kyrgios has played just six matches in the past three years following four rounds of knee and wrist surgery. He is currently ranked No.652 in the world.

He and Sabalenka have both declared they will treat the exhibition match seriously - and the former Wimbledon finalist is confident his body, namely his troublesome knee - will hold up.

'I don't know whether to call it a miracle or anything, but my knee feels like it's gotten younger by a couple of years,' the tennis showman said this week.

'I don't want to jinx it, but I have a new lease on life on court.

'Honestly, I'm in a really good space at the moment and, physically, I've been putting in the work.'

Kyrgios also plans to take part in January's Australian Open, where he will need a wildcard from tournament organisers.

Given his box office status, it is highly unlikely he won't feature at Melbourne Park if fit and healthy.
