TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The comedy-drama film Mendadak Dangdut is making a comeback with a fresh version starring Anya Geraldine in the lead role. The original film, which was released in 2006, became well-known for its iconic song "Jablai."
Anya Geraldine portrays Naya, a pop singer from Jakarta who is forced to switch her career path and become a dangdut singer to save her life. "Listen up, I'd rather go to jail than listen to dangdut!" she exclaims in the film.
However, as time goes on, Naya begins to realize that dangdut is not just low-quality music but a reflection of the soul and the lives of many people. She eventually discovers a deeper side of dangdut that transforms her life.
"Although the movie centers around Naya's internal conflict as she saves herself by becoming a dangdut singer, there is also entertainment in it. The comedic moments will definitely make the audience laugh. It's a complete package for anyone seeking an entertaining film with a modern story," said Anya Geraldine in a press release shared with Tempo.
Reviving Dangdut Pride
The new version of Mendadak Dangdut is directed by Monty Tiwa and produced by Sinemart and Amadeus Sinemagna.
The film aims to revitalize dangdut pride and encourage a broader audience to enjoy dangdut music without prejudice. Through its storyline, the film seeks to prove that dangdut is not just for one group of people but is a musical genre that can be appreciated by everyone.
The production team believes that dangdut, as an authentic Indonesian music genre deeply rooted in various societal layers, carries unique energy, emotion, and stories that can enliven any atmosphere.
"Mendadak Dangdut seeks to elevate dangdut to a broader level and celebrate pride in a genre that has become part of the nation's identity," the official statement reads.

In addition to Anya Geraldine, Mendadak Dangdut features a list of popular and talented casts, including Keanu Angelo, Joshua Pandelaki, Nurra Datau, Wila Salim, Dwi Sasono, Fajar Nugra, Adi Sudirja, Opie Kumis, Sadha Triyudha, Calvin Jeremy, Putri Particia, Dimas Projosuandi, Octavianus, Giant Jay, Hendrik Betta, and Dominique Sanda.
The film is scheduled to be released in cinemas on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
