Neville: 'Guardiola almost got there'

Gary Neville, Sky Sports:

Pep Guardiola shrugs his shoulders at full time.
He decided about 25 or 30 minutes out from the end of the game how he was going to win it and he almost got there.
That was a slug-fest. Liverpool may be the winners of this result.

A cracker is drawn!

City will be really disappointed. We saw Guardiola adapt like he never has before and nearly pull it off but not quite.

He threw on every defender he could. Took off his main man. But one wrong call from his back line - to play offside - cost them.

Arsenal will be relieved. I'm not sure how they would have felt going six points behind Liverpool already, because they are desperate to win soemthing.

The Reds will probably be the happiest with that result.

FULL TIME: Arsenal 1-1 Man City

Mosquera replaces Zubimendi for a set piece.

Reijnders sends it into the box. It is Saliba who heads away. Stones then wins a flick on but Raya gathers and sends it long.

City clear. Calafiori foul. Who knows how long we have left?

Nothing. The points are shared.

Arsenal 1-1 Man City

City have defended so well. Then they just randomly step up? A wrong decision in a moment like that and so costly.

City are going to come out a bit now. Free kick in and headed away.

Arsenal break. Gyokeres, Martinelli... Nunes comes out on top.

We're in the final minute but there will surely be more added on.

Goal:Arsenal 1-1 Man City (Martinelli 90 +3')

OHHHHHHHHHH WE HAVE AN EQUALISER!!!

City will be gutted. Absolutely gutted.

They have shown almost nothing. City have been unreal. But not this time.

Eze drops deep and plays a long ball. City almost revert to type and try to play offside, but Martinelli beats the trap!

His first touch is good, and his second loops it over Donnarumma's head. One bounce, into the back of the net.

We are all square! And have a few minutes left yet...

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Another Arsenal corner. Always brings a chance you feel.

Rice in. Gabriel, Calafiori, Saliba in there. Away.

City just have everyone back and are heading absolutely everything away.

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Saka crosses, headed away. Rice long throw on the way... cleared.

Stones replaced O'Reilly and Savinho is on for Doku.

You know the pattern here. Arenal pass it around, City defend. Not too many opportunites coming.

How much added on? Seven minutes.

SUB: Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Doku has been fantastic today. He has a sniff and he's pretty much on his own, skinning Gabriel and playing across goal but he is on his own.

Saka wins a free kick but O'Reilly is down. Treatment for him.

Ethan Nwaneri is ready for Arsenal. He replaces Trossard. O'Reilly is fine but Stones and Savinho are also coming on.

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Gabriel tries to play in Trossard and Nunes heads it. They want a flag because Trossard is off, but it doesn't arrive.

Another Arsenal change. Timber for Martinelli.

This is a good corner and Donnarumma flaps at it but does enough to get rid.

Then a really curious choice as Calafiori cuts in with his right and slices it absolutely miles wide.

The seconds are ticking away.

SUB: Arsenal 0-2 Man City

A curious change here as Haaland comes off. He complains to Guardiola, who laughs in response. Gonzalez is on.

Donnarumma is booked for time wasting, much to the joy of the home fans.

This is full on park the bus now. No pace in this City team bar Doku.

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

It's all very neat from Arsenal but the creativity has dried up a little. Silva wins his side a breather as he is fouled.

Here's a corner. Punched once again by Donnarumma. Latest cross in is headed away by Haaland.

Saka gets a cross in and Calafiori comes in a the car post - over.

SUB: Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Pep Guardiola is shown a yellow card as he makes his second chance. Nathan Ake replaces Phil Foden.

Ake has gone into the middle of a back three, too. A very defensive shape so it's pretty much all hands to the pump for the last 25 minutes or so.

Trossard gets the better of Nunes and advances. The pass is poor.

'It could have been the game'

That felt as though it may be the game as Doku sent Haaland away. With Foden on his right, a square pass would surely have led to a goal and a 2-0 lead.
But Haaland backed himself to shoot and score and - given his record - maybe it is hard to blame him.
This is a very good game now. Arsenal knocking on the City door very hard indeed.

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Saka goes down and Arsenal win a free kick that they can put into the box. A bit soft for my liking.

A bit of tussling and Gyokeres can't get the ball under control. All Arsenal now though.

CLOSE! Arsenal 0-1 Man City

More crowd frustration as Arsenal lose the ball in the middle of the pitch.

Another Arsenal corner though as Gvardiol blocks Timber's cross. Saka to take.

It makes its way all the way through to Trossard at the back post who sees his shot blocked, then a ball across goal misses everyone and Haaland clears!

Arsenal are getting closer and closer.

BIG SAVE! Arsenal 0-1 Man City

City can still threaten though and Nunes is on on the right until he slips. A dinked ball into Gyokeres is gathered by Donnarumma.

Donnarumma's latest kick is straight to Timber. He wins a throw.

Short this time and Arsenal get to work again.

Trossard wins a corner off Nunes.

Rice swings it in. Donnarumma misses it and it's awkward, but City do get it away.

Haaland shoots straigth at Raya and it comes back out. Eze clears the rebound and it hits Rice and just about goes over the bar!

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Bit of space for Zubimendi. Eze gets a shot away and stings the palms of Donnarumma! Better from Arsenal. Funny that.

Saka cuts in and shoots and there is a block. They are pushing...

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Arsenal and Saka are straight into it on the right. Doku, though, wins it back. Timber fouls him on the halfway line and will go into the book.

Eze wins it in the middle and Gyokeres breaks and plays in Saka.

City get back, as they have all game.

Ball out on the right to Saka though. Zubimendi ends up shooting and it's just over but the Emirates is alive.

SECOND HALF AND SUBS: Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Here we go. Arteta has blinked.

Eze and Saka are on. No messing about. Madueke and Merino make way, so looks like Eze will be playing centrally.

Think that will be a big relief for Arsenal fans. Arteta has been safe at times, but we know he needs something here.

Nunes is on for Khusanov too.

We're underway for the second half.

Carragher: 'We take Haaland for granted'

Jamie Carragher, Sky Sports:

He is a player we all take for granted in the Premier League. That is a Borussia Dortmund Haaland goal, on the counter attack.
We don't see it too often now, but when he is in that situaiton he is absolutely unstoppable and there is no way Gabriel can stop him.
There's no way I think he can miss. His finishing is absolutely sensational.

First half action

Here are some snaps from the first half.

All the big names heavily involved, from Haaland, to Donnarumma, to Rice, to Madueke.

That photo of Rice and Foden is so funny to me. Not sure why.

Plenty for Arteta to ponder

A much better game than earlier - I'll tell you that for free.

Arsenal started well and had lots of the ball - 68 per cent of it I am told - but created next to nothing with it.

I take Neville's point about the creativity and being safe. It's essentially Merino and Trossard over Nwaneri/Eze and Martinelli. I know which pairing I'd prefer to watch.

Will Arteta go for it, though? I'm not sure. Rememebr he has Saka in reserve too.

For City, they will be pleased. Haaland is relentless.

This is not the City side we are used to, but it's proved efficient so far.

HALF TIME: Arsenal 0-1 Man City

A chance as Merino breaks and O'Reilly does really well to win it off Madueke. Haaland then does well himself to hold it up and win a throw - City are in no rush.

Bernardo Silva then plays Doku and the Belgian wins a corner but the whistle is blown.

Boos as that happens. Are they for Arsenal, the referee, or what? Who knows.

VAR - NO RED CARD! Arsenal 0-1 Man City

More frustration aimed at Donnarumma but he goes long with his latest goal kick.

Now an argument as Silva hits the deck. A check on Trossard I think - I didn't quite catch it.

There are so many people around the referee. Ridiculous.

No further punishment on VAR. Silva kicks the ball at Trossard, Trossard throws it back at him. None of it with force and it's all a bit pathetic to be honest.

BIG SAVE! Arsenal 0-1 Man City

More sighs as Madueke breaks forward but is dispossessed.

He comes again, though, and Donnarumma has to punch his cross. Calafiori ends up getting the shot away and it's over,.

Plenty of frustration now with Donnarumma in terms of taking his time with goal kicks. Not that he will care.

Four minutes added on.

BIG SAVE! Madueke shoots low at the near post but the big Italian gets down well.

Another corner. Headed away.

'City will be delighted'

Six shots in the game so far and five of of them have come from Man City. I have to say I can't recall the Arsenal one but the stats tell me it wasn't on target.
As we approach half time, this remains a scrappy game and City will be delighted about that.
As I type, Noni Madueke has just seen a volley deflected over for a corner so Arsenal have doubled their shot count at a stroke
And now Saliba loops a header over from a corner. Progress of sorts for the home team but they simply have to be better than this.

Manchester City's head coach Pep Guardiola gives instructions during the Premier League soccer match between Arsenal and Manchester City in London, Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025. (AP Photo/Kin Cheung)

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Better from Arsenal as the ball is chipped into the box from the left and Doku puts over his own crossbar. Another corner.

Donnarumma punches and then Saliba heads over.

City struggling to clear and are aiming for the break now I think. Big chance for Arsenal to create something.

Neville: 'There is a feeling that Mikel Arteta hasn't taken the handbrake off'

Gary Neville, Sky Sports:

Without Eze, Martinelli not playing, there is a feeling that Mikel Arteta hasn't taken the handbrake off.
I wonder when he will look and thing 'OK, we need to do something here.'
The crowd have gone flat. They need a boost at the start of the second half.

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

87 per cent of possession in the last 10 minutes for Arsenal, according to Sky. But they have done absolutely nothing with it.

Khusanov nearly get his side in trouble with a short pass back to Donnarumma but Rodri is there to mop it up.

Doku dribbles into the box and keeps the ball but is sort of going nowhere. He gives it to Rodri who for some reason shoots on his left, but it's well over.

Arsenal fans really aren't happy here.

YELLOW CARD! Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Arsenal play through the lines a little better on this occasion but City do get back into shape. They are now defending Arsenal style, if I do say so myself.

Here's Bernardo Silva getting stuck in with a late one on Gabriel, who cries out in pain. He knew what he was doing - very deliberate.

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Big cheers from the home faithful as Bukayo Saka comes out to warm up.

Arsenal win a throw high on the left and this one will again go into the box. Calafiori to take, Gabriel goes over. Rice crosses, Madueke's header is poor.

VAR check Haaland on Gabriel - good friend, of course... - but the defender goes down very easily..

We play on.

'The crowd are getting very agitated'

It all feels a little emotional at the Emirates and I am not sure that currently works in Arsenal's favour.
The crowd are getting very agitated at every tiny thing and that nervous energy is merely transmitting itself on to the field.
Arsenal are only a goal down and are seeing plenty of the ball. The best plan from here is to stay calm and trust their football.

Green: 'The frustration is coming out already'

Rob Green, former England goalkeeper, BBC Radio 5 Live:

All the focus of the Arsenal attack is down this right hand side. They are putting everything through Madueke. They want him to run at the full-back and be direct.
The frustration of the Arsenal fans is coming out already.

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

City want a free kick as Reijnders hits the deck. The home fans then aren't happy as the referee stops play. I think that should have been a foul.

Another Arsenal corner. Rice to take this time.

Swung in - Donnarumma punches. Another.

Madueke's cross is headed away and cleared by Foden.

SAVE! Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Raya is forced into a save as Merino is caught on the ball and Reijnders shoots from the edge of the box. The Spaniard holds onto it, however.

Merino feeds Gyokeres but a City defender gets back. Khusanov, I think. Haaland is getting to that...

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

A little break in play as Khusanov gets some treatment. Foot stood on, nothing more.

City fans then want a corner as Donnarumma takes a while with ball in hand. Just about gets away with it I think.

Anyway, an Arsenal corner. This is where they thrive. Madueke to take this one...

It ends up with Foden fending off Madueke in his own box. I think that went out... but hey.

'A machine'

Erling Haaland fends off Jurrien Timber, outpaces Gabriel and then calmly scores with right foot in area. Machine.
The Emirates crowd roars in response to the goal, which was against the run of play.

'Guardiola has missed Rodri'

By Jack Gaughan At The Emirates

Rodri’s just jumped about 15 yards to turn over possession inside Arsenal’s half as the hosts built up and that, in essence, is what Pep Guardiola missed for the best part of a year.
Done with minimal fuss, Phil Foden applauds and City can now keep the ball themselves.

Arsenal 0-1 Man City

When you have Erling Haaland in your side you always, always have that threat. Devastating.

Pep Guardiola spoke about him being the best striker in the world last week. Yeah, I think I agree.

The Arsenal fans get behind their team but they trail now and need to score to get anything out of this game.

City now with the ball and then a moment to breathe as they recycle possession at the back.

Goal:Arsenal 0-1 Man City

Donnrumma certainly wasn't bought to play out with his feet, but we are seeing him do so here and an attempted ball out to O'Reilly at left back goes out of play.

BUT WE HAVE OUR OPENER... AND IT'S HIM!

Did anyone have any doubt he would score when he broke forward? Any at all?

Haaland gets stuck in with the build-up and City break so so nicely. Reijnders is the man driving forward as Haaland breaks his neck to get into space on the right, and it looks like the moment is gone.

Reijnders, though, sees him, feeds him, and Haaland finishes low past Raya into the back of the net.

What a moment in the game, and what a moment for City!

Arsenal 0-0 Man City

Arsenal are certainly enjoying more of the ball here in the early stages.

The first moment of excitement as TImber plays Gyokeres in down the right but his pass to Merino is mis-placed. Gary Neville calls for the forward to take on Dias on Sky.

Back now with Arsenal passing the ball around the back.

'Plenty for Arsenal in reserve'

Leandro Trossard starting is a big gamble and surprise by Mikel Arteta.
With Gabriel Martinelli, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka on the bench, there is plenty in the Arsenal reserves.
Saka back so soon is a big boost for the home side.

'City could be vulnerable defensively'

I still find it strange looking at a Manchester City team without all its usual stellar names. Not sure I can remember a champion team undergoing such a transformation in such a short period of time.
Today I feel they look a little vulnerable defensively. Much will be asked of their defensive lynchpin Rodri, here on the ground where he suffered last year's season-ending injury.
Arsenal are not at full strength in attack. I always feel I am missing out when Martin Odegaard doesn't play. But I fancy Mikel Arteta's team to squeak a tight game by the odd goal.
As always there are a few Arsenal legends in the house and Freddie Ljungberg is discovering that a simple flat cap is proving to be no kind of disguise as he sits on the front row of the Press box.
He must have posed for a dozen selfies already. And he's a nice guy, Ljungberg. He was never likely to say no.

Arsenal 0-0 Manchester City

Half of the Emirates pitch in shade, half draped in sun.

It's City with the early territory but Arsenal win the ball back quickly and play back to Raya.

Neither of these teams like not having the ball, so we'll see how it goes. But the Emirates is ready.

Gyokeres drives forward in the middle of the pitch and feeds Calafiori. Khusanov crunches him however to win it back.

Serious big game feel here!

KICK OFF: Arsenal 0-0 Man City

Was very intrigued looking at these team sheets.

Pep has of course opted to stick rather than twist. Fine. But Trossard over Eze is interesting.

Anyway, City get us underway.

Here come the teams!

Thanks Tum. Much appreciated!

Hello all! I have just come from Bournemouth vs Newcastle, so things can only get better... right?

Anyway, here comes the teams, led out by Gabriel and Bernardo Silva.

Cannot wait fo this one!

Countdown to kick-off

Alright, we're just minutes away from the action and I'm going to leave you in the very capable hands of my colleague Lewis.

I'm predicting a 2-0 Arsenal win. Can't see past that imperious Gunners' defence to be honest.

Rodri vs Baby Rodri

Martin Zubimendi has long been in the shadow of his Spanish team-mate Rodri but today he has a chance to make his mark. The former Sociedad star has made a good start to life in north London and is coming off a stunning brace against Nottingham Forest last time out.

Let's see if he can stake his claim to be the best Spanish No 6 in the Premier League and maybe even nudge Rodri out of La Roja's starting XI at the World Cup.

Can Gyokeres end the slander?

Despite scoring three goals in his first four Premier League matches, Gyokeres continues to get a fair bit of hate on social media, especially on X. Even the most passionate haters will have to eat humble pie if he can chip in with a decisive contribution today.

Strength in depth for the Gunners

Eze out, Trossard in. White and Saka back in the squad. This Gunners squad is pretty stacked these days. Arteta has one hell of a group to work with. No more excuses.

Haaland's 'poor' start to the season

Five goals in his first four Premeir League matches represents Haaland's slowest start to a league season. Crazy stuff. The City man is coming off a brace against Manchester United last weekend and he's got plenty of fond memories against Arsenal.

Oh, he'll also be looking to get one over the Gunners and Myles Lewis-Skelly after the young defender mocked his celebration in their 5-1 thrashing last term.

Gunners looking to reclaim second place

A win for Arsenal today will take them back up above their north London rivals, Tottenham and ensure they keep hot on the heels of the leaders, Liverpool.

City, meanwhile, have the chance to draw level with the Gunners with victory. Defeat today will be their third in five matches. It's not a match either side can really afford to lose, given the pace which Liverpool have gone out at.

Does that mean we're headed for a goalless draw? I reckon Arteta would take that if you offered it to him now.

Arteta: 'It's long matches against Man City so you're going to need a lot of players'

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal boss, Arsenal.com:

That's what we want, we have a strong bench as well to make decisions there in relation to the score and the context of the match. It's long matches against Manchester City so you're going to need a lot of players.

Rodri must have been looking forward this one

It's been 364 days since Rodri suffered an ACL injury in City's heated 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates last term. Almost exactly a year on, the Spaniard is only now just finding his feet again in the heart of that City midfield.

Is it any wonder that his return has coincided with more consistent City performances? I think not. Anyways, today is sure to be an important, if not slightly emotional one for the midfielder. Football has a knack for throwing up the most engaging storylines and I would not be surprised if Rodri has a hand in the outcome of this clash.

They've gone too far

Gunners fans have been known to be a little confident at the best of times but there is real optimism going into this one. Arteta's men have been unaffected by their loss to Liverpool on matchday three and can really assert themselves with a win today.

The thing about a really difficult start is that if you get points in those games then you're all set for a bumper campaign.

Odegaard: 'Looking at everyone together reminds you of the quality we have in the group '

Martin Odegaard, Arsenal skipper, Matchday programme:

We had our squad photo on Wednesday, and looking at that with everyone together reminds you of the quality we have in the group now.
I think it’s a bigger group than we've had in the last few years, and the level is unbelievable. We see that every day in training, it's a lot more competitive, and in the end, everyone wants the same thing.

Gunners arrive for duty

The home side are in the house ahead of the 4:30pm kick-off in the capital. Arsenal feel like they can beat anyone these days and they will be especially confident having thrashed City 5-1 in their last meeting at the Emirates.

I know it's early in the season, but it really does feel like an Arsenal win today will establish them as the favourites for the title.

Pep Guardiola claims Arsenal are given more favourable treatment than Man City

Nothing like some spicy quotes to inject a little more needle into a heavyweight clash like this one. And thankfully, Guardiola provided just that when he claimed that Arsenal have been given more favourable treatment than his side when it comes to spending.

Pep Guardiola, Man City boss, pre-match presser:

Only I want to say to my friend Mikel Arteta, if he wins the title it will be just because he spent, not because he worked a lot or his players. It's like Liverpool. If Arne (Slot) win again, it will be because he spent a lot of money, right?
'Because it's not just Man City that happened, right? Listen, for many, many years every club can do whatever he wants.

Gaughan: 'A complete and utter shambles for Manchester City fans'

By Jack Gaughan At The Emirates

A complete and utter shambles for Manchester City fans travelling down to the capital on the rails today. Cancelled trains from Piccadilly earlier in the morning mean overcrowded coaches and standing all the way down for plenty of them. There seems to be a problem for football fans on Avanti every single Sunday.

A giant tussle in the capital

By Tum Balogun

Good afternoon and welcome to Daily Mail Sport's coverage of the game of the weekend, Arsenal vs Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium.

After today's clash, Mikel Arteta's men would have played both of their title rivals, and if they can collect a victory, they'll be delighted with their record of four wins from their opening five matches.

City on the other hand, have recovered from their slight wobble before the international break. Guardiola's men, although far from their best, look in better shape than they did for large parts of last term.

It promises to be an intriguing clash and we'll be here with you every step of the way for the 4:30pm kick-off. Stay tuned for the team news, comments from the managers and then all the action when it gets underway.
