Attending the Haul at At Thohir, SBY Reveals His Strong Brotherhood with the Late Mochamad Thohir

REPUBLICA.CO.ID, DEPOK — Former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) attended the 9th Haul event of the late Haji Mochamad Thohir held at At-Thohir Mosque, Cimanggis City Depok, Sunday (2/11/2025) evening. SBY, when giving a speech, said that he had a mutually respectful relationship with the deceased.

According to SBY, the first meeting with the deceased was in 2004 in Cikeas. “A blessing meeting that opens a solid brotherhood,” he said.

SBY also honors him for his understanding of government, development and the business world. “He is a person who deserves to be treated very well,” he explained.

The son of Haji Mochamad Thohir, Garibaldi (Boy) Thohir revealed that such haul events are regularly organized every year.

“Every year, we organize a haul. Thank God this is his ninth, he is in contact with his friends (Haji Mochmad Thohir) who have my history invited,” he said. Haul is a commemoration of someone's death. 

In addition to SBY, prominent figures from his administration were also present, including Hatta Rajasa, Joko Suyanto, Jero Wacik, and members of the Thohir family. Boy Thohir said the deceased had many friends due to his humble nature.

The deceased was known as a persistent figure in business despite difficult circumstances. He was an orphan at the age of 11 and lived as a migrant. His tenacity, persistence, and integrity earned him trust. "By struggling from zero, he was able to advance and educate his children well," he said.

He said that, in addition to maintaining ties, his organization also wanted to commemorate the deceased by building the At Thohir Mosque as a form of service to him. The mosque would benefit the surrounding community, as it is not only a place of worship but also a place of economic activity. In front of the mosque, there is a bazaar and Quranic education facilities.

"We can contribute as much as possible to the community, nation, and state," said Boy Thohir, who is also the Patron of the Haji Mochamad Thohir Foundation.

Boy Thohir emphasized that the most important thing about his role model was not his business acumen but his good morals, which treated people with respect. "So, we must pay attention not only to human beings but also to spirituality," he said.
